Reflections on The Old and New in the World of Poker

This article is being republished with permission courtesy of our friends at AintLuck.com.

Just a few reflections as we get set for a new year in the poker world. No one really knows what the next 12 months have in store. That is perhaps the only thing that anyone knows for sure right now. In January 2010, no one would have imagined any of the following:

• That the 2nd incarnation of the Durrrr Challenge on Full Tilt Poker would be further along than the 1st one, which seems to be all but dead.

Attorney For Ernie Scherer III: “No Proof of His Guilt In Parents Murders”

The double murder trial of Ernie Scherer III continued on Wednesday with his attorney suggesting there is not enough evidence to convict the poker player.

Scherer III is accused of bludgeoning to death his parents, Charlene Abendroth and Ernest Scherer Jr., in their Castlewood Country Club, California home in March of 2008.   Prosecutors argue that the younger Scherer was after his parents $1.5 million inheritance.

Online Poker Traffic Rises Nearly 1 Percent

The holiday week resulted in an 0.9 percent rise in online poker traffic according to monitoring website PokerScout.com.

Player counts dropped steeply on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Eve, dipping even lower than last year's holidays. The plunge was to be expected, however, as the holidays fell on weekends this year and a larger-than-usual number of players took to the roads and skies to spend time with their families.

UPI: Online Gambling Not A Good Bet

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Expanding legal Internet gambling in the United States is a long shot now that Congress is more heavily Republican, gaming industry experts say.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid fell short last month in his effort to allow U.S. casino companies set up Internet poker sites and access a portion of the multibillion dollar offshore industry. The chances of success are diminished now that Republicans control the House and have more members in the Senate.
