Armed Bandits Hold of Bookie Shop With Roll of Wall Paper

A terrified bookmaker shop manager handed over £2000 to what he thought were two armed gunmen.  Instead, it turns out the bandits held up the shop, not with a gun, but with a roll of wallpaper.  That wallpaper was concealed in a bag and made to look like a gun.

4Flush this week has a good piece about how the mighty have fallen in the world of poker since the days of the mid-2000’s poker boom.  Some are obvious like Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson and Russ Hamilton.  Another big name, Annie Duke, seems to have fallen off the face of the Earth after being propelled to stardom as a finalist on Donald Trump’s “Apprentice” (Joan Rivers, who some would say saw right through Ms. Duke, ended up being hired in the end).

Professional Footballers’ Association to Institute Blanket Ban on Gambling by Employees

The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) will no longer permit its employees to gamble following the embarrassment that came about with revelations that union chief executive Gordon Taylor placed more than £4million on 2,000 bets.  He’s also is reported to owe at least one bookmaker over £100,000.

The action is being implemented for the ‘integrity of the union’.

Casino to Open Soon in Martha’s Vineyard

BOSTON (CBS/Associated Press) — A Martha’s Vineyard-based Indian tribe is claiming to have won federal approval to open a gambling facility on the island.

The Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah, a federally-recognized tribe, issued a statement on Tuesday saying it planned to move ahead with plans to convert an unfinished community center on tribal lands into a temporary Class II gambling facility.

New Jersey Allowing Individuals to Ban Themselves From Online Gambling

(Associated Press) - ATLANTIC CITY — New Jersey is extending its self-exclusion list to allow people to ban themselves from online betting.

The action comes with Internet gambling set to begin in just over two weeks, and some advocates worry about a spike in compulsive gambling.

New Jersey, like many other states, allows people who feel they have a gambling problem to place their names on a list of those who are not allowed to enter any of Atlantic City’s 12 casinos.

Man Charged in ‘Urban Terrorist’ Attack on Detroit Barbershop, Gambling Den

Detroit police have charged Larry Walker Jr. with assault against a federal officer following a mass shooting at a barbershop that left three dead and six others wounded.

Prosecutors filed the criminal complaint Friday afternoon alleging that Walker Jr. had attempted to ram the officer’s vehicle with his own car.

The FBI says Walker yelled, "No one chases my mamma," referring to a female. Walker was wearing body armor.

Bwin.Party Given Waiver to Operate in Atlantic City

European online gambling firm Bwin.Party has been given the green light to begin offering Web poker and casino games for real money to New Jersey residents and visitors by month’s end via a partnership with the Borgata Hotel and Casino.

The state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement awarded the firm a waiver to begin operating.

Person of Interest Arrested in Barbershop, Gambling Den Slayings

(Associated Press) - A convicted felon who was wearing body armor when police arrested him in a Detroit suburb will be questioned in an investigation into the fatal shooting of three men in a back gambling room of an east side barbershop.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig described the man as a person of interest in Wednesday evening's shooting at Al's Barber Shop that left six other people wounded. Speaking at a Thursday news conference at police headquarters, Craig said the bloodshed may have stemmed from an ongoing feud.
