Absolute Poker Exec Brent Beckley Gets 14 Month Prison Sentence

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An owner of Absolute Poker, one of the three largest Internet poker companies, was sentenced to 14 months in prison on Monday after admitting to deceiving banks over the processing of gambling proceeds.

Brent Beckley, 32, joined Costa Rica-based Absolute Poker in 2003 and became its head of payment processing. Last December, he pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to conspiring to break U.S. laws against gambling on the Internet. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud.

That's never been done before in the history of the WSOP.

In the same week, Barry Shulman, his wife Allyn and their son Jeff all made final tables, with Allyn the only one in the family to go on to win a tournament.

In her case it was the WSOP seniors tournament, which was open to men and women aged 50 or older.

Maine Newest Casino’s Future in Doubt following Development Permit Nullification

PORTLAND, Maine (Associated Press) - The immediate future of Maine's newest casino is in doubt.

Department of Environmental Protection officials and the Attorney General's Office were meeting Monday and discussing what course of action to take after a judge nullified a development permit for the Oxford Casino less than two months after the casino opened in the western Maine town of Oxford.

Zynga Gets Bids to Offer ‘Real Cash’ Online Poker

GTECH G2 and Playtech confirmed to have submitted bids to provide the social giant Zynga Poker with a real cash online poker platform, according to eGaming Review Magazine Monday.

Revenues Way Up at 32Red: Will Enter Italy Market

Shares at 32Red have risen 3.3 percent, valuing the company at £30 million following an upbeat forecast of full year revenues.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie: Meadowlands Casino Talk a ‘Waste of Time’

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Associated Pres) While New Jersey lawmakers heard pros and cons Thursday on the prospect of casino gambling at the Meadowlands, Gov. Chris Christie, who opposes the idea, called the discussion futile.

"I think any conversation about extending gaming to the northern part of the state or any place else in the state is a waste of time," Christie said at an unrelated bill-signing in Trenton. "As a practical political matter, it's not going to happen."

South Carolina Man Arrested for Killing Wife, Gambling Associate

Columbia, S.C. – (Associated Press) - Investigators say they have charged a man with killing his wife and his colleague in a gambling business in his upscale suburban Columbia home.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said 42-year-old Brett Parker turned himself in Friday after two murder charges were filed more than three months after the killings.

Lott says Parker shot his 44-year-old wife, Tammy, then picked up another gun and shot 46-year-old Brian Capnerhurst on April 13. Arrest warrants say Parker then tried to make it look like he was being robbed.

Poker Pro Michael MIzrachi Accuses Giorgio Medici of Welching on WSOP Side Bet

Poker pro Michael Mizrachi has accused fellow player Giorgio Medici of refusing to pay on a World Series of Poker bracelet bet. 

Mizrachi posted a series of Twitter messages claiming that Medici has said he is now filing for bankruptcy and is unable to pay the said side bet.

He also noted that Medici has allegedly behaved in such a matter in the past.

Dark Knight Rises Box Office Odds Scrapped in Wake of Mass Shooting

Oddsmakers at Bookmaker.eu have cancelled further betting on the weekend opening box office receipts for “Dark Knight Rises” following a shooting rampage at an Aurora, Colorado movie theatre late Thursday night during a screening of the film. 

A gunman identified as James Holmes, 24, of Aurora, Colorado, killed 12 and injured 38 during the shooting rampage.  A 3-month old baby was among those sustaining an injury during the attack.

Many theatres have since yanked screenings of the film following the incident.

MACAU, CHINA – July 20 – PokerStars Macau today announced that it has added two more special events to the 2012 Asia Player of the Year season. The Macau Poker Cup Championship (MPCC) will take place from September 7-16, while the inaugural APPT: Asia Championship of Poker (ACOP) is scheduled for October 26 to November 11. Both events will be held at the Grand Waldo Entertainment Complex.

The Macau Poker Cup Championship (MPCC) is the annual finale for Asia’s premier poker series and will feature a HKD $20,000 buy-in Main Event that has a HKD $4.5 million guarantee.

Darren Wright, the 43-year-old head of now defunct online gambling outfit BetED.com, has been given two years probation for his role in running the establishment.

Meadowlands Casino ‘Inevitable’

Meadowlands Racetrack Operator Jeff Gural appeared on 'NJ Today' with host Mike Schneider and explained that he has been in talks with an established gaming company in regard to the topic of expanded gaming at the Meadowlands.

"I think it is inevitable that you will see casino gambling (at the Meadowlands)," Gural said. "I would be lying if I [didn't say] one of my motivations for doing this (taking over the Meadowlands Racetrack) was that I think there will be casino gambling at some point."

Former Arizona Legislator Convicted in Casino Gambling Scheme Charged with Impersonating Son

SAN DIEGO – (Associated Press) - California prosecutors say a former Arizona legislator who went to prison in a 1990 corruption scandal used his son's identity to get a California ID card and real estate license so he could work as a broker and teach a real estate class.

U-T San Diego reported Thursday that Don Kenney has been charged with five felonies including perjury, forgery and impersonating his son, a Washington state attorney.

Churchill Downs Applies for Online Poker License

Kentucky’s Churchill Downs is the latest entity to apply for an online poker license in the state of Nevada.

The Silver State became the first to legalize online poker late last year and has been accepting applications over the past few months. 

Churchill Downs, which currently offers legalized horse betting on the Web, already signaled its interest in offering Internet poker after purchasing the media venture Bluff Magazine earlier in the year.

If approved, Churchill Downs would be permitted to offer legal “real money” online poker within the state of Nevada.
