Blast in Illegal Chinese Gambling Hall Leaves 14 Dead

BEIJING (Associated Press) -- An explosion Monday at an illegal gambling hall in a village in southern China killed 14 people and injured seven others, state media report.

The blast struck at around 2:30 p.m. (0630 GMT) outside the city of Kaili in the poor southern province of Guizhou, the official People's Daily newspaper and Xinhua News Agency said. While the cause of the explosion officially remains under investigation, police believe it was set deliberately and are treating the incident as a crime, People's Daily said.

Fox TV Show ‘Rake’ About Hard Edge Attorney With Gambling Addiction (Video)

Fox is set to debut “Rake”, starring Greg Kinnear as a brilliant but self-destructive attorney with a gambling problem.  He is always owing money to his bookie.

The show is based on an Australian television series of the same name and is being billed as a legal comedy-drama.  It debuts Thursday January 23 at 9 pm EST.

Kinnear stars as Keegan Deane who, in the Australian version, defends cases involving cannibals, polygamists and a doctor who has sex with his dog.

Nevada Casinos Lose $1.3 Billion in 2013

CARSON CITY, Nev. (Associated Press) — Nevada’s largest casinos suffered a combined net loss of $1.35 billion in 2013, marking the fifth year of losses since the onset of the Great Recession.

The annual “Gaming Abstract” released Friday by the state Gaming Control Board looks at the total revenues of casinos that gross more than $1 million in gambling revenue.

While total revenues of $23 billion were up slightly from 2012, so were the losses.

Total revenue is the money spent by patrons on gambling, rooms, food, beverage and entertainment.

Colorado Man Indicted for Running Online Gambling Site

BOULDER, Colo. (Associated Press) -- A 62-year-old Boulder County man accused of running an online gambling website for at least three years has been arrested.

The Daily Camera reports ( http://bit.ly/1m0dvb0 ) Larry Kyle Richardson was arrested Friday after a grand jury indicted him on one charge of violating the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act. He is suspected of running an online gambling website from Jan. 1, 2010, through Jan. 8, 2013, "in, or triable in, Boulder County."

Devils, Sixers Boss Not Worried Over Online Poker Sponsorship

NEWARK, N.J. — (Associated Press) - The chief executive of the NHL's New Jersey Devils and NBA's Philadelphia 76ers doesn't believe the teams will be cast in a bad light by agreeing to a multiyear sponsorship deal with one of the world's leading online poker companies.

Scott O'Neil, who runs the teams and the Prudential Center for groups led by leverage buyout specialist Josh Harris, and Norbert Teufelberger, the chief executive of bwin.party digital entertainment that operates partypoker, announced the historic deal Thursday.

Pascal Lefrancois Leads for Day 3 of PCA 2014 Main Event

There were 1,031 players at this year's PCA, hailing from 65 countries. Remarkably, given the horrendous weather conditions in the States, 346 Americans managed to get to the Bahamas accounting for 34% of the field, with 143 Canadians also present (14% of the field).

Shares in William Hill, Ladbrokes Plunge Over Fixed-Odds Machine Vitriol

Shares in the UK’s two biggest betting firms, William Hill and Ladbrokes, dropped 7 percent and 9 percent, respectively, Thursday following Prime Minister David Cameron’s assertion that fixed-odds machines need to be curbed.

The machines have been dubbed the “crack cocaine of gambling” by campaigners.

Cameron said he "absolutely shares the concerns" raised over the “epidemic” of fixed-odds terminals.

Mobster Gets More Than 9 Year Sentence for Pot Distribution

Though his lawyer argued the drug is mainstream, mobster Salvatore Larca has been sentenced to 9.5 years behind bars for running an illegal marijuana distribution business.

Openings Set to Start in Mob Financial Fraud Case

CAMDEN — (Associated Press) - Federal prosecutors will start making their case to jurors that a group of Philadelphia and southern New Jersey mobsters pulled off a white-collar financial fraud scheme.

The trial of Nicodemo Scarfo and six other defendants is scheduled to start Wednesday. Prosecutors say the defendants used threats to take over a mortgage company and then kept the firm’s assets for themselves.

Morgan Stanley Employee Gambled Away Millions of Bank’s Funds, Strangled Wife

A former product controller at Morgan Stanley was terminated by the company after losing millions of dollars due to an “accounting error”.  Investigators also believe Manas Kapoor, 35, strangled his wife to death the same day he was to attend a disciplinary hearing.
