Michael Jackson

Poker has a connection to almost everything.

Even Michael Jackson.

And through Doyle Brunson, of all people!

Yes, that's right, there's a connection between singer Michael Jackson, also known as the "King of Pop," and legendary poker pro Brunson, also known as "Texas Dolly."

Was Jackson, who died last month, a poker player?

Well, he liked to play games, but poker wasn't one of them.

And as far as anyone knows, the 75-year-old Brunson never moonwalked.

So what is the connection between one of the most famous names in the music world and one of the most famous names in the poker world?

The answer can be found in Brunson's book, "Super System," which was published in 1978.

The book is a primer on the basics of a handful of types of poker.

Also included in the book is a glossary of terms Brunson says are used to describe the various two-card opening hands (hole cards) in games such as Texas hold ‘em.

For example, a hand of two aces, or AA, is called "American Airlines" by well-jargoned poker players, Brunson notes.

An ace and a king-AK-is called "Big Slick," while a king and a queen-KQ- is a "Marriage" and a five and a ten-5,10-is a "Woolworth," he notes.

Among the other terms, according to Brunson, is that a jack and a five-J5-is known as a "Motown."

A "Motown"?

Brunson doesn't explain the origin of the term but it's obvious-J5 stands for the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson's first singing group, that was made up of he and four of his brothers.

Motown, a record label, signed the Jackson 5 to its first recording contract.

And now you know the rest of the story.
