It’s happened before when two teams from the same conference reached the College Football Playoff. And there’s a good chance it can happen again this season. Two years ago the Georgia Bulldogs won the SEC, but they didn’t face Alabama during the regular season or in the conference championship. Instead, the teams met in the CFP title tilt with Bama handing the Dogs an overtime loss.

UGA was denied a return trip to the CFP with a loss to the Tide in last season’s SEC title game, but they showed in those two matchups that they are on the same level. Kirby Smart has turned the program around posting a 24-5 record over the last two seasons and he has a legitimate NFL-caliber quarterback in Jake Fromm to run the offense. The only thing left for the Dogs to do is beat Alabama and win a national championship.

Georgia Bulldogs 2019 Season Preview

Throughout the roster the Bulldogs aren’t as deep as Bama or Clemson, but the gap is narrow and it’s closing. The bar has been raised in Athens with the Dogs playing in the CFP title game two seasons ago and barely missing out on a playoff berth last season. We can excuse that Sugar Bowl loss, which was an afterthought after the Dogs missed their chance against the Tide, and say UGA was one of the best teams in the country last season.

Georgia isn’t going to be flashy on offense. They’ve enjoyed success by being efficient and wearing down opponents. That blueprint has worked and we’ll see more of the same in 2019. Fromm and the rest of the skill players will operate behind one of if not the best offensive lines in the country. The Dogs averaged over 466 yards and 38 points per game last season and they have the potential to be even better.

It all starts with Fromm, who scouts say is a future starter in the NFL. He led the Dogs to the national title game in the 2017 season and he threw for 2,761 yards and 30 touchdowns with just six picks a season ago. There is another level for him to reach and he needs to get there in 2019 with a lack of experienced pass catchers. The damage doesn’t have to come through the air, though, with a ground game that features D’Andre Swift, who ran for 1,049 yards and 10 scores.

There isn’t the star power on defense that the other side of the football has, but the group was menacing last year, finishing 13th in the nation and second in the SEC in total D. Expect some of the six five-star recruits to fill the holes that were created, and by the end of the season those guys will be stars. If things go right, this group can potentially be better than last year’s top-15 unit. Georgia may be just a notch below Clemson and Bama in overall talent, but it has everything needed to make a run at a second CFP berth in three years.

2019 Georgia Bulldogs Schedule

Week 1: at Vanderbilt Commodores

Week 2: Murray State Racers

Week 3: Arkansas State Red Wolves

Week 4: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Week 5: OFF

Week 6: at Tennessee Volunteers

Week 7: South Carolina Gamecocks

Week 8: Kentucky Wildcats

Week 9: OFF

Week 10: vs. Florida Gators (Jacksonville, FL)

Week 11: Missouri Tigers

Week 12: at Auburn Tigers

Week 13: Texas A&M Aggies

Week 14: at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

It is the SEC, the toughest conference in the country, but Georgia has the benefit of not playing Alabama and LSU during the regular season. The Dogs also have a home-heavy slate with only two true road games among the first nine. If they get past Notre Dame in a wicked non-conference matchup, the Dogs could easily be undefeated heading into the final three weeks of the season with games at Auburn and Georgia Tech sandwiched around a home tilt with Texas AM.

If the Bulldogs don’t make the CFP it won’t because of their schedule. Granted there are no layups in the SEC, but the Dogs are the class of the East.
