There has been some controversy surrounding this year’s World Cup. In the past, associate and affiliate members were given four spots in the World Cup.  This year, there are no associate or affiliate members in the field. Associate and affiliate members were lower level teams.  These were the teams that would be considered the “Cinderella stories” of the tournament.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Cricket, here is a brief overview of the rules.  It is somewhat similar to baseball, but there are still many differences. There is a batting team and a bowling team (the pitching team). The batting team remains up to bat until all ten of it’s wickets have been taken (outs in baseball.  Runs can be scored in numerous ways.  Most notably by hitting the ball over the boundaries in the air or on the bounce.

Much like baseball, outs can be made when the ball is caught in the air. An out can also be made by bowling the ball past the batter and hitting the stumps.

There’s our brief rules overview for Cricket.  Now, let’s preview the ten teams that are competing at this year’s Cricket World Cup.

England

This year’s host is the favorite to win the World Cup. England has appeared in three World Cup finals, but has yet to take home the prize. England has one of the best batting attacks in the World Cup. England is led by Captain Eoin Morgan, who is complemented by Jos Buttler and Joe Root.

India

The two-time World Cup winner comes into the 2019 tournament as one of the favorites. India has the number one ranked bowler in the world in Jasprit Bumrah.  They also have a very deep staff of bowlers. India also has one of the top batsmen in the world in Virat Kohli. With a deep lineup of batsmen, and bowling depth, India will be tough to beat.

Australia

The Aussies have a top of the order that is probably the most powerful in the field. They have won five of the seven times that they have appeared in the finals, so they’re no stranger to the big stage.  The Australian team should be around at the end.

South Africa

South Africa enters the tournament playing well. They could have the top bowling attack in the tournament. If their batsmen can step up their games, they could be a contender.  If they solely have to rely on their bowling, it probably won’t be enough.

New Zealand

They have one finals appearance to their credit. This team doesn’t have many superstars, but their balance have gotten them where they are. Kane Williamson will have to carry this team if they are to have a chance.  Their bowling will have to be stellar as well.

Pakistan

Pakistan hasn’t been playing well as of late. They’ll need to pick things up if they are to contend for the World Cup. Mohammed Amir is a top bowler and will need to spark Pakistan if they want to be in the finals.

West Indies

The two-time World Cup winner will be led by their batsmen.  Bowling is a weakness for this team, so they’ll need an extraordinary effort from their bowlers to get to the finals.

Afghanistan

They’ll need a lot of luck to get into the top four. They’ll need Rashid Khan to dominate the batsmen of the other countries in order to have a change.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka does have one World Cup to their credit.  However, don’t look for number two this year. They’ve been struggling, and will need a ton of things to go their way in order to get into the top tier.

Bangladesh

Shakib Al Hasan will need to do everything for Bangladesh if they are to advance in this tournament.
