Judge Voids Revel Sale to Canadian Firm

CAMDEN, N.J. – (Associated Press) -A bankruptcy court judge has voided the proposed sale of the former Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to a Canadian firm that has since backed out of the deal.

Judge Gloria Burns on Friday granted a request by Revel Entertainment to cancel the $110 million sale to Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management.

The company had won a court auction for the failed $2.4 billion casino resort. But it backed out when it could not resolve a dispute with bondholders over debt from the construction of the casino’s costly power plant.

Golden Nugget to Sue Over Tax Rise

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — (Associated Press) - An Atlantic City casino who says its taxes would rise dramatically under a proposed tax assistance bill designed to help the struggling seaside resort says it will sue to block the plan.

The Golden Nugget says its calculations of the amount each casino would pay under a proposed payment in lieu of taxes drastically raises taxes for it, Resorts and Bally's — three of the city's smaller casinos — while giving huge tax breaks to big casinos owned or soon to be owned by billionaire Carl Icahn and gambling giant Caesars Entertainment.

Feds Dispute Claims That Hockey Star Thomas Vanek Lost $10 Million Betting

Lawyers for a Rochester, New York man accused of running an illegal sports betting ring have stated that National Hockey League player Thomas Vanek owed the defendant nearly $10 million in gambling debts.

"It was monopoly money," Matthew Parrinello, who represents bookmaker Joseph Ruff, said Tuesday. "Was he ever going to pay? No. Did they expect him to pay (the entirety he owed)? No."

The field increased by 423 players in comparison to last year's tour stop in the Czech capital, and easily surpassed Vienna's 1,432-entry field. Houston Area Raid Nets Nearly 100 Slot Machines

RICHMOND, Texas (Associated Press) - A Houston-area raid has led to the seizure of nearly 100 illegal slot machines and one arrest.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office says the case involves illegal gambling at a game room near Richmond.

The sheriff's office on Monday said 49-year-old Rene Valdez of Rosenberg has been charged with gambling promotion. Valdez was freed on $750 bond following Saturday night's raid.
