Democratic Presidential candidate, Barack Obama, started to surge at online prediction markets where he moved up a full one percent at intrade.com and was now a -128 favorite at Bookmaker.com. By the end of last week, GOP candidate John McCain had improved to even odds at most online gambling firms. He was still listed with a 51 percent chance of becoming the next US President at intrade.

Most recent state polls show Obama with a slight lead, though the two candidates are going neck to neck.

Barack Obama fought to regain the initiative in the presidential race on Tuesday as the Wall Street financial crisis threatened to stall the recent burst of momentum behind John McCain.

The banking meltdown has thrust the economy back to the centre of the campaign, giving Mr Obama a chance to hit back after two weeks of declining poll numbers and escalating Republican attacks, according to Andrew Ward of the Financial Times of London.

Obama said the turmoil represented a "final verdict" on the failed economic policies of George W. Bush, the president, and Mr McCain, accusing them of fostering a "winner take-all, anything-goes environment", and then doing nothing as the system collapsed.

McCain spent much of Tuesday repairing the damage from his claim on Monday that the US economy was "fundamentally strong". The Obama camp capitalized on McCain's quote by featuring it prominently in ad runs.
