Online Gambling Firms Centrebet, Playtech, William Hill Profits All Up

 

More good news for the online gambling sector as a number of top firms reported profit increases on Thursday:  Centrebet, Playtech and William Hill among them.

Following in the footsteps of strong financial numbers from Ireland’s online powerhouse Paddy Power, Centrebet out of Australia said its profits jumped a whopping 75 percent.

New and innovative products were allowing it to grow, according to a company statement.

William Hill “Worst Ever Royal Ascot” Blamed for Poor Profit Margins

William Hill continues to hint at moving its telephone business offshore following dismal results over the past year compared to its online arm.

"Poor horse racing results" led to a 33% fall in net telephone revenue, with a statement from Hills explicitly pointing out: "The board has previously noted the challenge of competing with UK betting exchanges and Irish offshore telebetting operators, all of whom have benefited from significant tax and cost advantages over UK bookmakers. The situation is under active review."

England Football Club Owner’s Son Has Near $1 Mil Gambling Debts

The son of a Top 4 England Premiership football club owner is a deadbeat, so claims intermediaries working on behalf of a Costa Rican-based online sportsbook looking to collect funds owed.

"He (the son) admits to owing but claims he's lost enough money in the past to the book that the debt should be forgiven," the intermediary, Charlie Bishop, tells Gambling911.com.  "He also says that the sportsbook slow paid him once but that's because this individual was a notorious slow payer in the past."

William Hill to Bid for Centrebet

The United Kingdom's second largest bookmaker, William Hill, is looking to acquire Australia's second largest privately held bookmaker, Centrebet.

Centrebet originated from Alice Springs, Northern Territory and was the first bookmaker to be licensed in Australia in 1993 and the first bookmaker to go online in the Southern Hemisphere. Centrebet was acquired by its biggest domestic rival, the SportOdds Group in 2003 for the sum of AUD$46.55 million. In 2005, SportOdds merged its Centrebet, SportOdds.com and SuperOdds.co.uk businesses into one entity, known as Centrebet.
