The USC Trojans odds to win the 2009 BCS Championship were set at 3/1 at BodogLife.com and - yes again - they are the favorite.

Expectations are high for the Trojans once again this year.

It has a chance, according to Athlon Sports, if new quarterback Mark Sanchez plays up to his glowing potential and the rest of the team, with 11 returning starters, matures quickly and maintains the momentum created from yet another convincing victory in the Rose Bowl.

Athlon also points to the defense and a "soft" schedule:

The defense, with seven of those 11 starters, should be outstanding again, particularly at linebacker and in the secondary. Offensively, Carroll needs to identify which of his seven - count ‘em, seven - star-spangled tailbacks will get the majority of the carries, while improving the receiving corps and rebuilding an offensive line that lost a bevy of early-round NFL Draft picks.

"This is a very exciting team, with a lot of speed and energy," Coach Pete Carroll says. "I think we have a chance to be a really nice team."

Most of the tough games will be played at home and the schedule is "softer" than last year, at least on paper.

Ironically, it is one of those home games that presents the single biggest challenges in 2008.

Tim Hyland, About.com:

Ohio State. The Buckeyes, who visit Los Angeles on Sept. 13, are the only team standing between the Trojans and the BCS Champsionship Game. The showdown will not only be the best game of the season, but may also go down as one of the great cross-sectional matchups the game has ever seen. Though few seem to give Ohio State much of a chance in this one, it will be interesting to see how the Trojans' new presumed starter at quarterback, Mark Sanchez, will react when faced with a smart, athletic and veteran Ohio State defense led by All-Americans James Laurinaitis and Malcolm Jenkins.

Ohio State, we should point out, is listed with 6/1 odds of winning the 2009 BCS Championship game.
