Button overcame balance problems to take his first pole of the season, the eighth of his career, and his first for McLaren.

“It’s been quite a long time since I got my last pole position, back in 2009 in Monaco. It’s been emotional,” said Button, who won the F1 title that year with the Brawn team. “Maybe a five-week break between every race is what I need ... I’m getting old now.

Raikkonen qualified fourth but will start from third on the grid

"It wasn't the easiest of qualifying sessions," he said. "The car is okay but it doesn't look like we have the speed that some others have and we were certainly not quick enough for pole today. The race is a different story. On the grid we're in front of the guys who are ahead of us in the championship so we'll try to score more points than them."

This race goes off at 8 am EDT Sunday September 2.
