Internet Gambling Growth Slows in New Jersey

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Associated Press) — The growth of New Jersey's Internet gambling market slowed somewhat in its third full month of operation, with the Atlantic City gambling websites posting a nearly 9 percent revenue increase in February.

The 16 online gambling sites had posted a 28 percent gain in January, to $9.5 million. In February, the online sites won $10.3 million.

Neteller Returns to the US: Shares Surge Nearly 3 Percent

Online payment solutions company Neteller announced Monday that it will be relaunching services in the US.

The company was forced to flee the US market in January 2007 after two of its founders were charged with violating anti-gambling laws.  The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was passed just two months prior to the highly publicized arrests, with breaking that news story.

Lindsey Graham Set to Introduce Bill Banning All Forms of Online Gambling

South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is on the cusp of introducing a bill that would strengthen the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006 and fully ban all forms of online gambling including poker.

While UIGEA essentially does just that, the US Justice Department interpretation of the law opened the door for state-by-state legislation.  Graham wants no part of it.

Kentucky Court Overturns Seizures of Online Gambling Domain Names

A Kentucky Appeals court ruled Friday (February 21, 2014) that the state cannot seize 132 online gambling domain names.  The court determined that a trade organization, the Interactive Gaming Council, can step into the 6-year-old case and represent operators of named websites.   An earlier ruling declared that trade organizations such as IGC and the now defunct Interactive Media Entertainment & Gaming Association (iMEGA) lacked standing.

Federal Bill Outlawing All Online Gambling Except Poker to be Introduced in March

U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-Nevada) said he anticipates new federal legislation banning all forms of online gambling except poker to be introduced in the coming months.  Such a measure would ban Internet sports betting and online casinos, the later of which are currently permitted in the state of New Jersey.

Heller and others in Congress have attempted to pass similar legislation in recent years without any success.

Breakup of Bwin.Party Possible With Activist Fund Taking Stake in Company

The Financial Times of London is reporting that a New York-based activist hedge fund will be taking a stake in struggling Bwin.Party

SpringOwl, which is managed by the activist fund Cumberland Associates, has “agreed in principle” to purchase around 6.1 per cent of Bwin.Party from the group’s founders, Ruth Parasol and Russ Deleon.

As part of the deal, SpringOwl will have the right to appoint one director to the board.

Cell Phones May Boost Internet Gambling in New Jersey

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – (Associated Press) - Internet gambling analysts and casino executives say the increased use of cellphones to place bets could accelerate the growth of the nascent industry in the state.

“Mobile applications will play an enormous piece of the puzzle in online wagering, which is why we are so positive and see so much upside in months ahead,” said Joe Lupo, senior vice president of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which began offering gambling Monday over Android cellphones on 3G and 4G networks.

NJ Online Gambling Operators Hamstrung by Credit Card Authorization Problems

The Financial Times on Thursday noted that New Jersey may not be living up to expectations where its burgeoning online gambling industry is concerned.  The main obstacle: getting through the signup process, and that includes getting money on the respective websites.

The London Affiliate Conference 2014 attracted hundreds of people in Day 1 with this year’s event having outgrown itself from previous years.  It was forced to move to London’s biggest conference venue, Earl’s Court.

Bitcoin Price Down Nearly 7 Percent Friday: Volatility Declining, Debuts

The price of bitcoin had dropped approximately 7 percent Friday, quite likely on news that one of the biggest exchanges, Mt.Gox, had stopped processing withdrawals temporarily.

The price of bitcoin had fallen to $686 but rebounded later in the evening to $703, matching the day’s opening price.

Zynga Shares Rise With UBS Upgrade to ‘Buy’

Social gaming giant Zynga witnessed its biggest share price surge in nearly a year Tuesday thanks to a positive upgrade.

UBS raised its rating on the game maker's stock to "buy" from "neutral," saying Zynga's core operations had begun to stabilize under the new management team and that its $527 million acquisition of mobile game developer NaturalMotion would result in more scale and innovation at Zynga.

Neteller customers Targeted in Phishing Scheme

Customers of the popular online wallet Neteller were targets of an apparent phishing scheme, it was revealed this week.

Numerous customers received emails over the weekend notifying them that their accounts would be closed if they did not provide pertinent personal details.  Those emails turned out to be fake.

Pennsylvania Explores Online Gambling, Keno

HARRISBURG — (Associated Press) - With top Pennsylvania state lawmakers and Gov. Tom Corbett seeking ways to plug a projected budget deficit, they are considering expanding lottery gambling and, possibly, legalizing online gambling.

The Senate Finance Committee will hear testimony Wednesday that focuses partly on adding keno to the Pennsylvania Lottery's game lineup.

Virgin Launches New Jersey Online Gambling Site This Week

Richard Branson wants a piece of the online gambling market in New Jersey as his Virgin Group is set to launch a real money site there this week. is due to launch on Friday.  It was one of 15 approved last fall to operate in the Garden State.  Governor Chris Christie signed a bill into law allowing real money online gambling sites offering poker, roulette and blackjack. 

The Virgin Group has teamed up with the Tropicana and online game maker Gamesys.

London Affiliate Conference 2014 Registrations Massively Up (Video)

Alex Pratt of London Affiliate Conference (LAC) tells the event is so far seeing record numbers over past years.

“We are seeing between 50 and 100 registrations per day,” he relayed.

The event, now celebrating its 8th year, will take place on February 7-9 (2014).  Over 3000 people attended last year’s LAC with that number to be higher this year, based on Pratt’s estimates.
