Paddy Power Takes Bets on Which Animal Will be Killed Next at Copenhagen Zoo

In recent weeks, when one thinks of the word “shameful” throughout Europe, three things come to mind:  Putin, Copenhagen and Paddy Power, and not necessarily in that order.

Well, we know Vladimir Putin just sanctioned the Crimea but at least he didn’t murder a healthy baby giraffe or take bets on the outcome of a murder trial accompanied with ads tied to a paraplegic runner that read “Will He Walk”.

Paddy Power is now taking bets on which zoo animal will be slaughtered next at a Copenhagen Zoo.

Paddy was condemned last week for publishing an advertisement encouraging bets on the Oscar Pistorius murder trial.  The South American paraplegic runner shot and killed his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine's Day last year.

Pistorius claims he shot into a locked bathroom believing an intruder had entered the residence he shared with Steenkamp.  Instead he fatally wounded his girlfriend.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority ordered the bookmaker to remove the newspaper advert, which offered a "money back" guarantee on bets if the South African athlete is acquitted for the murder of his girlfriend. The ASA received a record number of complaints regarding the tasteless ad.

Just when you thought Paddy Power’s behavior was the most reprehensible in all of Europe, zoo officials in Denmark appear to have topped the Irish betting firm.

A Copenhagen Zoo has come under fire in recent weeks for the execution of a healthy baby male giraffe, in front of small children no less.

And it gets worse.

On Monday, that same zoo put down four healthy lions.

The zoo insists it’s all about facilitating healthy breeding procedures.

For its part, Paddy claims it is attempting to draw attention to the plight of endangered Danish zoo beasts and even offered to save Darius – the since executed giraffe – by bringing him to Ireland.  Of course, they wanted to race him and take bets on the winning giraffe in what was being billed as  “the first ever giraffe racing” event.   Presumably, other targeted zoo giraffes would have joined the herd in Ireland.

Paddy has made a zebra at the Copenhagen Zoo the favorite to be killed next at 5/1 odds followed by a polar bear at 8/1 odds.
