Illinois Gambling Expansion Measure Approved: Online Language Removed

The Illinois state Senate voted 32-20 in favour of SB1739, a measure that would allow expansion of gambling within the state’s borders.  Language related to legalized online gambling had been removed in recent days.

The changes in the legislation, which would add five new casinos including in Chicago, followed a heated exchange last month between bill sponsor Democratic state Sen. Terry Link and the head of the Illinois Gaming Board, who questioned why a Chicago casino would have its own city board for oversight, among other things. The legislation creates a Chicago Casino Development Authority, whose members would be appointed by the mayor.

A separate bill related to legalization of Internet gambling will soon be voted on, however, Governor Pat Quinn as already expressed apprehensions over such legislation.
