The Hurt Locker vs. Avatar: Oscars Odds Down to Wire

The Hurt Locker vs. Avatar

The Hurt Locker vs. Avatar will be the thing to watch during this evening's Oscars ceremony.  Of course we won't know which film wins until the very end of the often long drawn out sleeper.

Gambling911.com can report that The Hurt Locker had lost a little bit of steam at BetUS.com by Sunday afternoon.  Previously listed with -200 or slightly shorter odds, The Hurt Locker was now coming in at -160, meaning one would have to bet $16 to win $10 as opposed to $20 or more to win $10 (the bet amount is refunded assuming The Hurt Locker wins)

Avatar, meanwhile, continued to hold firm with even odds.

Anny H. Ruth explains why The Hurt Locker vs. Avatar will have everyone glued to their seats Sunday night.

There are many ways The Hurt Locker and Avatar are pitted up against each other, but either way you look at it, both films have 9 nominations and are leading the Oscar buzz. This is how the competition breaks dow:

Action/Drama vs. Animation 3D
Kathryn Bigelow vs. her ex-husband, James Cameron
Low budget film vs. Blockbuster film
9 nominations vs. 9 nominations.

Only four women have ever been nominated in the Best Director category and there is also a controversial element should The Hurt Locker win, Ruth points out.

Critics are saying that if Bigelow wins as Best Director, it is because she is a lady making man's film (The genre of war films has predominately been thought of as a man's genre).

The Economic Times of India points out:

While, Cameron's 3D sci-fi juggernaut, which has taken more than USD 2 billion at the box office, won the Best Film trophy at the Golden Globes, 'Hurt Locker' sweeped the BAFTAs and Directors Guild Awards.

Re: The Hurt Locker vs. Avatar: Oscars Odds Down to Wire

I cannot believe my own eyes! So many comment by people who think The Hurt Locker should not have won the Oscar over Avatar. I loved Avatar, I have it on Blue-Ray. I loved The Hurt Locker. Didn't buy it. Too dark a movie. BUT! The Hurt Locker is a deeper, more intens and also in some way a better movie than Avatar. Why? One word: Patos! (Look it up to understand what that means!) It means something like passion, or depth, or meaningfulness.. in lack of a better word. (English is not my first laguage -I live in Norway) The movie is not only about war, but about what gives a man a purpose in life. What gives a meaning to his life. He has great family, a beautiful wife and a kid but he wants ti, he LOVES to go out and defuse the bombs. That's the discourse he has chosen. It is his patos. His life's purpose. Too many people live in the same old paradigme without actually thinking or filisofing over what makes them sad or what makes them happy. The start in kindergarden, go to school, get an education, get a job, get married, have kids and then become a pensionist and them die. Why are so many people unhappy then? Why are deseases like depression or anxiety growing in the epidemic rate? Why did the book Eat, Pray, Love hit a nerve in so many million women?? People with good life, good edication, great families are still not feeling they live their life and they are unhappy. Why? Because it is about breaking away from the learned traditions and finding your own purpose in life. What makes you happy? Finding you patos! That is the true essence of The Hurt Locker, told very subtle. Other films that take up the same subject, but in other manner is The Fight Club. There is a man having a perfect life, still feeling empty inside. He wants to fight and break away from the massmedia and our buy-and-throw society. That's why people love films like The Hurt Locker and Fight Club. They are actually about patos. Avatar is a great movie visually, technically with a sweet story like Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves and it was greatly shot and told. Avatar is also in some sence about finding your patos. Sepcially whan he said in one scene: "The Navi's are never going to move, why should they? What do they want? What can we give them? Jeans? Tv''s? Money? We have nothing they want, theu live life in peace and to the max." ..or something like that. Then he desides to change side and live with them and like them. He finds his patos. Patos is the main reason people love different movies that hits a nerve.

The Hurt Locker VS AVATAR

I just saw the Hurt locker. It almost put me to sleep. The one scene where he put out a car fire with a dry-cem extinguisher was highly unreal. He then touches the same car that has been on fire with his bare hands. That was a complete joke. Avatar on the other hand was a wonderful great entertainment. The acadamy has ther heads in there...........

The Hurt Locker won because of dirty politics.

The Hurt Locker won because of dirty politics, not because this is a good movie. Avatar is miles ahead of The Hurt Locker. Why? Avatar teaches to live in peace; The Hurt Locker - in war. How a human can like The Hurt Locker, which is not a movie, but a military training program (vs. Avatar)? After this Oscars fraud, I won't watch Oscars ceremonies anymore.

Hurt Locker NOT WORTH THE OSCARS IT RECEIVED

Hurt Locker is NOT worth all the oscars it received. I'm shocked!!! I loved Avatar, fantastic film, took me to another world. Ok so the story was predictable, big deal, the navi and Pandora made up for any weak dialogue or storyline.I was completely surprised to not see it take home best picture, that was given to Hurt Locker. So I take the time to watch Hurt Locker. I figure, well it's got to be good to beat out Avatar. ...... I was wrong. This movie was AVERAGE (at best), it mildly entertained my husband and I, that's it. I did not have that "Oh man I don't want this film to end" feeling like I did with Avatar or "wow I'm on the edge of my seat, adrenalin pumping" like I did with District 9. NONE OF THAT HAPPENED. The only thing I can think of is that Bigelow won because she's a woman. I'm a woman, I think it's great she won....but not over James Cameron and Avatar. I can imagine Cameron and his crew are dumbstruck.

hurt locker blows

One more vote for "hurt locker blows".

Hurt Locker vs Avatar ! Oscar Sell outs!

This is just ridiculous ! Hurt Locker is an average Military Drama. Not a bad movie but not a bad movie is not worth 6 Oscars especially Best Picture and Best Director. Are you serious? Why not Dear John movie? It is just so upsetting then even freaking Oscars bunch of Haters!!! If I were Cameron I would not attend next Oscars at all. Such a masterpiece as an AVATAR to loose Best Picture to a Hurt Locker??? What were they thinking!! Who cares it was most expensive movie, can any one even repeat it for the same money? 12 years in making, such an attention to detail and a mind blowing story telling it was more then just a movie it was a Masterpiece of Man genius and an example of how Dreams come to life. You can not ignore that and give a best picture for a Lame Military story about a selfish' adrenalin junkie who neglects his family and his follow men just to satisfy his Ego. Are you serious story of Hurt Locker so Lame they guy whom this movie is about is suing the directors for telling his story wrong. Cause its about Iraq (with no disrespect to our Troops) doesn't make it a BEST PICTURE. Give it to Precious or Blind Side a story about urban heroes. But not to a movie about egoistic prick. Hurt Locker not even about our War Heroes it was a BS. And for the BEST MOVIE a saw for the last 5 years they give 2 OSCARS???? Screw you OSCARS you are a BUNCH OF HATERS!!!

Hurt Locker vs Avatar ! Oscar Sell outs! REPLY

I thought it was a great movie. I haven't seen Avatar yet, but from the graphics and CGI stuff it looks really good, kinda like Final Fantasy XIII. But I can tell you most of what you said is just opinionated from the fact "it's just a military drama". Welll yeah, true. But new movies these days that are coming out don't always have to involve a story behind it. Honestly, I think movies these days are about perspective, and The Hurt Locker is trying to justify that. It's about how it's like to be in their shoes, and how war can so easily take your life in these present days. You should see the Canadians and Americans who are currently in war right now. They love this movie, or might even be shitting their pants by it. Well, you would wonder why they love it so much, because only those soldiers understand what it's actually like. It's rough shit. After seeing this movie, I personally acknowledge those guys more. The story is about a man's addiction to war - to which he can't live in a stable environment.

i havent seen hurt locker

i havent seen hurt locker yet and im dieing to but i must say, you cant talk about this if you havent seen avatar yet.it is a groundbreaking movie that will change movies fore ever.once in a lifetime sorta thing.i dont know how it lost.

Avatar

I have not seen hurt locker as it never came out in the cinema near me so I can not comment. Avatar was an amezing movie I agree and the grafics are wonderful the story line is nothing very new though to be honest and the acting was not mind blowing either it was good but not briliant. I think people hyped it up a lot because of the grafics take that away and you actually have a ver mediocre film.

Avatar's brillance

I agree completely... story line was not new, acting not brilliant.... and for my taste, the 3D effects weren't spectacular. My gauge for whether it is a good movie is when i say to myself "hmmmm, I'd really like to see it again, because it worked on so many levels and i would see something different next time." With Avatar... I feel that I've seen it all, and once is probably enough.
