Bill Self’s bunch seeks revenge for a Jan. 17 road loss to No. 15 Iowa State when No. 9 Kansas hosts the Cyclones on Monday.

The Cyclones hosted TCU on Jan. 31 and No. 15 Iowa State came away with an 83-66 victory as 10-point home favorites. They’ve now won four of their past five games, but are just 2-3 ATS in those contests. Defensively, the team is really struggling with 76.4 PPG allowed over its past five contests. Meanwhile, the Jayhawks are holding their opponents to just 64.5 PPG over the course of their four-game win streak. No. 9 Kansas has picked up two wins over ranked opponents in its past four games and has looked very good  in doing so. However, they are just 2-2 ATS in those contests.

These teams met on Jan. 17, when the Cyclones beat the Jayhawks 86-81 as 4.5-point favorites in Ames. Iowa State has now won-and-covered in its past two meetings with Kansas, including a 94-83 victory over the Jayhawks in the Big 12 tournament last season. Kansas has won nine straight games SU when hosting the Cyclones and it is 5-3-1 ATS in those contests. The last time the Cyclones won in Kansas was Feb. 19, 2005.

Over the past three seasons, Kansas is 8-0 ATS in home games after failing to cover the spread in two of its past three games. The Jayhawks are also up against an Iowa State team that is just 3-13 ATS after two or more consecutive Overs in the past three seasons. Both teams are healthy heading into this game, so injuries will not affect the outcome of this one.

The Cyclones have won two straight games and will now seek their first victory in Kansas since 2005. This Iowa State team is one of the best offensive teams in the country, averaging a nation-high 17.8 APG and 80.4 PPG (13th in NCAA) on 49.1% shooting (13th in NCAA). Defensively, they have really struggled with 68.6 PPG allowed (240th in NCAA). It’s been even worse over the past five games and they’ll need to patch things up against a Kansas team that has played well since losing to the Cyclones a few games ago.

F Georges Niang (15.2 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 3.5 APG) has been on fire for this Iowa State team of late. He’s averaging 21.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG and 3.0 APG in their past two contests and will now be heavily relied on to perform at a high level against Kansas. Niang had 15 points (6-of-14 FG, 3-of-6 3PT), five rebounds and five assists in their most recent meeting and will need to shoot the ball well from the outside once again in this one. Niang will also need to be better on the glass, as the Jayhawks’ frontcourt can be a handful in that department. The Cyclones do average 26.9 defensive RPG (24th in NCAA), so they’ll just need to do what they always do in order to be successful against Kansas there.

G Monte Morris (11.1 PPG, 5.7 APG, 1.7 SPG) is the reason this team passes the ball so well. He is an outstanding distributor and can also score the ball efficiently (50% FG) when called upon. Morris had 11 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in the victory over Kansas on Jan. 17 and will need to continue to play aggressively in order for them to win in Lawrence.

G Naz Long (11.7 PPG) exploded for 20 points in the win over Kansas last meeting. He’s scored just 26 points total in the four games since that excellent performance, and he’ll need to regain his stroke from the outside (41% 3PT) in order for Iowa State to beat the Jayhawks in Kansas on Monday.

Kansas has picked up four quality wins since losing to Iowa State in Ames a little over two weeks ago and they now will try to even up the season series with a win in Lawrence on Monday. This Jayhawks team is solid on both the offensive and defensive end, but not great on either. They are averaging 71.8 PPG (83rd in NCAA) on a mediocre 43.7% shooting (166th in NCAA) on offense and they allow 64.2 PPG (127th in NCAA) on the defensive end. Where this team does excel, however, is on the glass, as they are now averaging 39.3 RPG (18th in NCAA).

F Perry Ellis (12.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG) is the most consistent player on this Kansas team. Ellis is the team’s leading scorer and rebounder and he’s going to have to be magnificent against Iowa State on Monday. He had a big game the last time they played, finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in the second half. Ellis will need to stay out of foul trouble in this one or the Jayhawks won’t have much of a chance.

Freshman F Cliff Alexander (8.1 PPG, 5.8 RPG) has really struggled over the past two games for Kansas, averaging just 3.0 PPG and 4.0 RPG in 17.0 MPG. Alexander is the second best rebounder for the Jayhawks and he’ll need to be active on the glass for Kansas to beat Iowa State on Monday. He had some of his best performances of the season in wins over Oklahoma (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Texas (15 points, nine rebounds), and it would be a big boost to this team if he could show up in this one.

G Frank Mason III (12.7 PPG, 4.0 APG, 3.8 RPG) is this team’s most consistent scorer, finishing with double digits in points in 18 straight games for Kansas. He had 21 points in the loss to Iowa State earlier in the year and will need to do more of the same on Monday.

G Wayne Selden Jr. (9.0 PPG, 3.1 APG) had 12 points in the loss to the Cyclones last game. Selden has struggled with his shot this season (34% FG 37% 3PT) and will need to find some consistency going forward.
