BRIGHTON AT CHELSEA
Credit to Graham Potter who has getting Brighton to put up a feisty effort since taking over even if it hasn’t quite shown up in the W/L record. They looked significantly more competitive in back to back draws and they were unlucky to not pull out three points from at least one of those contests. We might take a look at them here were it not for the fact that Frank Lampard is still looking for his first win at Stamford Bridge in Premier League play. The Blues ripped League Two Grimsby Town 7-1 on this field last time out so Lampard is no longer ‘winless in all competitions’ but the desire to get the first Premiership win on his watch will give the home team a focus they might not usually have against this class.

BURNLEY AT ASTON VILLA
Burnley is currently in 9th place with 8 points while Villa has struggled this year and is currently in the relegation zone with a mere 4 points. They’ve not played well at Villa Park where they’re 1-1-1 scoring 3 and conceding 2. Their play has been ‘tight’ at home and not tight enough on the road where they’re 0-0-3 scoring 3 and conceding 7. This could be the upset of the day. Burnley is still winless on the Premiership road but an early elimination from League Cup play gives them a full week to prepare while Aston Villa was in action against Brighton on Wednesday. The public is looking for a Villa win and the odds reflect this. We’ll instead take a shot with the road team.

MANCHESTER CITY AT EVERTON
In most years, Pep Guardiola would likely be very happy with the performance of his Manchester City team. The defending Premiership champs are 4-1-1 after 6 games scoring 24 and conceding only 6. The problem this year is that they’re 5 points back of Liverpool and there’s no reason to anticipate that the Reds will collapse. The turning point may have been a shocking 3-2 loss at newly promoted Norwich City. Since then, Manchester City has obliterated everything in their path winning three straight games in three different competitions by a combined margin of 14-0. Everton has won 2 of 3 at home but dropped a decision to Sheffield United last time out. The wins came against Watford and Wolves and this is a huge step up in class. Look for a disciplined and defensive minded effort from the visitors.

NEWCASTLE UNITED AT LEICESTER CITY
It’s doubtful that Brendan Rodgers will be content with Leicester City being the ‘best of the rest’ in the Premier League. While it’ll obviously be a tough task to outlast either or both Manchester City and Liverpool, the Foxes need to not drop points in ‘winnable’ games like this one. Leicester has lost only once this year, a 1-0 setback at Manchester United. A draw at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea is not unforgivable but they needed a better result than the scoreless draw in their home opener against lowly Wolverhampton. They’ve looked much better in their last two home fixtures, beating Bournemouth 3-1 and Spurs 2-1. Newcastle United is just above the relegation zone and while they’ve got a road win this year but they appear to be outclassed in this one. Leicester City has been defensively very sound this year allowing just 5 goals which ties them with Liverpool atop the Premier League stat sheet. They’ve not been as potent offensively which gives us pause backing them on the handicap. Then again, no interest in backing the visitor.

ARSENAL AT MANCHESTER UNITED
In most seasons, this matchup at Old Trafford would be one of the marquee fixtures of the season. This year, however, it’s not quite as compelling. Arsenal is at least level with Leicester City with 11th points though there’s little to suggest that they have anything for the top two teams. They are unbeaten in five games in all competitions winning 3 straight. They’ve had some curious results—losing at Liverpool is forgivable but they needed better than a home draw to the Spurs. They also blew a 2-0 lead at lowly Watford and had to settle for a 2-2 draw. They won last time out against Aston Villa though the visitors held the lead at the half. The Gunners have scored 11 and conceded 10 and a narrow +1 differential won’t get it done at the top of the table. For this reason, Unai Emery might soon be on the ‘hot seat’ if he’s not already. For Man U, they’re lucky to be where they are after underachieving in the early going. They’re currently in 8th place with 8 points but their play in the Premier League has been very uneven. They’ve won only 1 of their last 5 since the opening day thrashing of Chelsea. They followed that up with a 1-1 away draw at Wolves, a 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace and a 1-1 away draw at Southampton. They took a hard fought 1-0 home win against Leicester City in their last action at Old Trafford but immediately turned around and lost 2-0 at West Ham United. Man U is much better defensively though Arsenal has the more potent offense. This is an important game for both teams so it’s likely to be played very close to the vest. We’ll take a shot on the draw and a low scoring one at that.
