The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Wednesday that the state capital is one of five cities where Virginia will allow legal casino gambling.

The Richmond City Council will eventually select a preferred operator. And then it will go to voters in a November referendum.

One of the latest contenders is the Houston-Based Golden Nugget. It has submitted an application to build a $400 million casino resort at a location in the city that it hasn't disclosed yet.

Another recent candidate is Wind Creek Hospitality. The gaming company is owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians from Alabama. It has proposed a $541 million casino resort in South Richmond.

The Virginia-based Pamunkey Indian Tribe, which is the only tribe with federal gaming rights in the state, has also proposed a casino for South Richmond.

Other proposed casino projects include a partnership between Urban One and Peninsula Pacific Entertainment. That project would involve a property owned by Philip Morris USA in South Richmond.

The Cordish Companies has submitted a proposal for a 17-acre property near Scott’s Addition. The spot currently houses the Movieland cinema complex. And Bally’s would like to open a casino on a 61-acre site in the city.
