The fourth event since the PGA Tour reboot will have a different look than the first three. A number of big name players opted to take a week off leaving Bryson DeChambeau, one of three players in the OWGR top-10, as the betting favorite to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which gets underway from the Detroit Golf Club with first round action on Thursday.  Bookmaker offers a generous welcome bonus with a maximum of $1000.

We don’t have much history to work with since this is just the second tournament at the DGC. Defending champ Nate Lashley was a late qualifier and didn’t even make the opening odds list for the 2019 edition. He ended up winning by six-shots. Several players withdrew from last week’s event due to the coronavirus and there’s a good chance it happens again. In fact it already did with two players backing out after a positive test. Odds Analysis

Rory McIlroy won’t be sitting at the top of the odds board this week. That’s because the world’s No. 1 ranked player is sitting this one out after three finishes outside the top-10 following the Tour’s return. In fact, the top five in the OWGR are all taking a break with Webb Simpson at No. 6 the highest ranked player in the field.

It isn’t a surprise to see DeChambeau top the odds chart the way he’s been playing since the reboot. He climbed into the top-10 at No. 10 with three top-10 finishes going T3 at the Schwab, T8 at RBC Heritage and T6 at last week’s Travelers. The work he did during the hiatus has certainly paid off. And he’s the only player currently with single-digit odds. Simpson at +1415 is next in line.

If we learned anything from this event last year, though, it’s that anything can happen. Lashley literally came out of nowhere as the last man in the field and won his first and so far only PGA Tour event. He’s been struggling recently with MCs in his two post-hiatus starts and four straight since before the shutdown. Lashley is currently listed at +17550 to repeat. Doc Redman was runner-up with Rory Sabbatini and Wes Roach at T3. Not exactly murderer’s row, but an indication that the course is forgiving.

Speaking of the Detroit Golf Club, it’s a stock par-72 that plays out to 7,340 yards. There is a good mixture of short and long holes with bunkers surrounding the smallish greens serving as an obstacle. The field scored an average of 70.1 last year and with no changes small numbers should be all over the board.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Preview

It’s hard not to like DeChambeau to prevail. Of the 45 golfers in the field who played the first three events, no one has a better run. The only thing missing is a victory. But, there’s a reason why a number of players decided against playing and fatigue could be a factor. Besides, there are better value picks on the board.

Combining recent form with a sliver of course form is Redman, who finished six-shots back of Lashley here last year. He’s made a slight climb up the odds board since the numbers were released showing that others believe in him. He’s played through the weekend in all three events capping off last week’s T11 with a final-round 63. His last seven rounds have been 69 or lower.

As far as course fit goes look to Brandt Snedeker and Patrick Reed. Both have shown superior game on correlated courses and they finished in a tie for fifth at last year’s playing. Colonial has a similar layout, which is where Reed placed T7 a few weeks ago. Snedeker has been up and down with his game, but remember his last victory was on a similar Donald Ross-designed course at the 2018 Wyndham Championship.

Two players I’m keeping an eye on are Viktor Hovland and Tyrrell Hatton. Hovland climbed into the OWGR top-50 with progressively better finishes over the first three events. He hasn’t scored over par in any of his 12 rounds in those tournaments and a final-round 64 here last year moved him into a share of 13th. Hatton is making his second start since the reboot and didn’t miss a beat at Harbour Town carding a 20-under over the final three rounds for a T3.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Pick: Tyrell Hatton
Top-5 Lock: Bryson DeChambeau
Top-10 Lock: Doc Redman
