NFL Betting – New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles

It doesn’t look like Eli Manning was the problem with the New York Giants after all. Benched after losing the first two games of the season, Manning returns to the role of starter for the injured Daniel Jones as the Giants look to end an eight-game losing streak when they take on NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. Ending a three-game losing streak would put the Eagles in a tie with Dallas for first in the pathetic division, but it’s not their fault they compete with a dysfunctional group of teams.

Odds Analysis

Just how bad are the Giants? A week after losing to Miami, 37-31, as a 10.5-point favorite, the Eagles surfaced as an 8.5-point favorite for Monday night’s tilt. That loss was the third in a row for Philly going 0-3 ATS in that stretch. That skid is nothing compared to what the G-Men are going through. Jones tossed three picks last week in a 31-13 loss to Green Bay, the Giants eighth straight setback where they’ve gone just 2-6 ATS. Philly is getting plenty of love at the betting window forcing the line to -10. The total has gone the other way since opening at 46.5. Plenty of action on the under caused the number to drop to its current 45.

New York Giants

With a number of offensive playmakers in and out of the lineup all season, it’s hard to consistently put up numbers. The Giants tallied just 13 points last week, the seventh time they’ve scored fewer than 20 points in a game this season. Two of those games took place in the opening weeks of the season with Manning at the helm. The Giants lost 35-17 in Dallas to open the year and fell 28-14 to Buffalo, forcing a change at the quarterback spot.

The Jones era got off to a fine start with a pair of wins, but it’s been downhill since with Saquon Barkley, Golden Tate and Sterling Shepherd all missing time. Barkley had his best game since returning from an ankle injury rushing for 83 yards last week and Tate is expected to play on Monday. However, tight ends Evan Engram and Rhett Ellison have been ruled out. The Giants haven’t played a game with all their playmakers on the field at the same time. Though I’m not sure it would make much of a difference.

Pat Shurmur insisted that Jones would return to his starting role when healthy, which appears to be just a short time away. In the meantime, it gives Manning one last opportunity to show he can still play at a high level. It’s obvious he’s not in the Giants plans after this season and at 38 he may be on his way out of the league, but wouldn’t it be nice go out with a bang?

Philadelphia Eagles

As hard as they’ve tried not to be a playoff contender this season, the Eagles are right in the thick of the NFC East race, trailing the Cowboys by a half game in the standings with a showdown between the clubs looming in a few weeks. This is a game one would think the Eagles have the advantage and oddsmakers agree pegging the home team -8.5 on the opening line. That wasn’t the case last week, though, when the Eagles were upset by Miami laying 10-points.

The bottom line is that the Eagles just aren’t that good. Besides their 5-7 record, three of their losses were to Miami, Detroit and Atlanta, teams that entered the weekend all having won three games. Playing as a favorite Philly is 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS, however, they are 2-0 SU and 1-1 ATS as a home favorite of eight or more points.

While the Eagles offense has experienced ups and downs this season, the defense had been its usual disruptive self and looks to get back to being that on Monday night. One of the unit’s worst games was against an unlikely opponent. Philly held its previous four opponents to 17 points or less before getting shredded by Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Dolphins. Fitz threw for 365 yards and three touchdowns helping the Fins overcome a 14-point second half deficit. “That game was 100 percent on the defense. We always fell if you give us 20 points we should win the game,” coordinator Jim Schwartz said.

We saw Carson Wentz and the Eagles put up big numbers against a lesser Miami defense and he should do the same against the Giants. The question is can the defense come up with stops after Fitzpatrick took them apart? As much as I’d like to see Eli ride off into the sunset he’s stepping into a difficult situation and the Giants aren’t playing with a full deck, which has me leaning toward a home team cover.

NFL Score Prediction: Philadelphia 30, New York 17
