2020 New Orleans Saints Offense Preview

As has been the case since Brees and Sean Payton were united in the Big Easy, offense will dictate just how good the Saints are. And there really is nothing that makes us think they’ll slip in 2020. Brees is getting up there, but we’ve been saying that for the last three years. All he’s done is post some of the best numbers. The stats weren’t as eye-popping last year since Brees missed five games with a thumb injury. But he’s accurate with his throws and rarely turns the ball over.

That’s been his MO over the years, and while the arm strength has deteriorated he’s made up for it with his intelligence. To make sure the offense continues to click, Brees is surrounded by a stellar cast of playmakers. There is of course Michael Thomas, who led the NFL with 149 receptions while being targeted an outrageous 185 times. Opposing defenses know what’s coming and they still have a hard time stopping it.

The Saints added Emmanuel Sanders in the offseason after he helped the Niners reach the Super Bowl. Tre’Quan Smith had only 18 catches last year with five of them going for touchdowns. The passing game is bolstered by running back Alvin Kamara, who ranked second with 81 catches, and tight end Jared Cook, who ranked third with 43 receptions. They don’t run the ball much, but Kamara and Latavius Murray are up to the task when called upon behind an underrated line.

A big reason for the team’s success the past three seasons was the play of the defense. The Saints went 7-9 each season from 2014-2016 with the group ranked near the bottom of the NFL in yards and points surrendered. They’ve been among the top-15 in both categories the last two years and the results were evident in the win/loss column. This side of the ball looks strong again heading into 2020.

Cameron Jordan anchors a line that could be one of the most menacing in the league. Jordan had a career-high 15.5 sacks last season and he’s amassed 40.5 sacks over the last three years. David Onyemata was resigned after making an impression in his first season as a starter. I said the group could be one of the best, that’s if Marcus Davenport and Sheldon Rankins rebound from injuries.

The secondary has a new look with Malcolm Jenkins back in the mix after a few years in Philadelphia. Janoris Jenkins proved a valuable pickup off waivers last season and forms one of the top corner duos along with Marshon Lattimore. The healthy return of Alex Anzalone and Kiko Alonso makes the group of linebackers one of the strongest.

2020 New Orleans Saints Schedule Analysis

Three straight NFC South titles have New Orleans as the team to beat. While the division looks to be improved, especially in Tampa with Tom Brady now at the helm, the Saints are still the class of the group. They get an early test when Brady and the Bucs pay a visit on Opening Day. The schedule ahead of the Week 6 bye doesn’t appear to daunting with a home contest against Green Bay a showdown between NFC elite.

There are some great matchups in the second half of the schedule starting with a tilt against NFC champion San Francisco in Week 10. A three-game road trip to Denver, Atlanta and Philadelphia precedes a Week 15 bout with the Super Bowl champion Chiefs. A rematch with the Vikings follows five days later on Christmas.
