The bottom line is winning football games and while it hasn’t been pretty, especially from an offensive standpoint, the Chicago Bears have been doing that this season. Winners of two in a row since their lone setback, the Bears head west for a NFC showdown with the Los Angeles Rams in Week 7 Monday Night Football. Some might say they’re doing it with smoke and mirrors, but the Bears find themselves atop the NFC North showing the ability to win close games. All six of their contests have been decided by a touchdown or less and they’ve gone 4-2 ATS.  Bookmaker.eu is offering a generous welcome bonus (max bonus $1600).

Odds Analysis

Despite winning five of their first six games the Bears still aren’t getting much respect. They hit the board as a 6.5-point road dog against a team whose four wins have come against the pathetic NFC East. It also marks the sixth time in seven games the Bears are getting points. When playing as a road dog this season the Bears are a perfect 3-0 SU and ATS following last week’s 23-16 victory as a 2-point dog in Carolina. The Rams need to show they can beat a team outside the NFC East. And since they’ve already completed the sweep they’ll have plenty of opportunities. LA fell to 0-2 SU and ATS against teams outside the weakest division in football following last week’s 24-16 setback to the Niners. Both teams cashed the UNDER in their previous three games forcing the total to tumble to its current 45 after opening at 47.

Chicago Bears

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: The Bears are winning thanks to their defense. I’m not talking 1985 good, but this group has been something playing situational defense. While they rank seventh in the NFL in total defense and scoring defense, it’s been difficult for opponents to convert in the red area and extend drives. The Bears have the No. 1 red zone defense and are second-best at stopping third downs.

The group has to be good every week to uplift an offense that isn’t going to scare teams. Some might say the Bears are the luckiest team in football having played only two teams with an above .500 record entering the week. In those games the Bears lost to Indianapolis and beat Tampa Bay by a point. The others have been close as well with their five wins decided by a combined 20 points. “The ultimate goal is to win the game, it’s not to put up a thousand fantasy points. It’s like, whatever it takes to win a game, that’s what you want to do,” Nick Foles said.

Foles has done just enough to get the Bears in the win column going 2-1 as the starter. He threw for 198 yards and a touchdown to beat Carolina last week. In his starts Foles has thrown for 690 yards and three touchdowns. The passing game has its problems but it does boast a top receiving threat in Allen Robinson, who’s been targeted a NFL-high 66 times with 40 receptions and a pair of touchdowns.

Los Angeles Rams

The Rams rank right up there with the Bears in terms of defense meaning points could be hard to come by. And beating a team outside the NFC East would do a lot for the team’s confidence. Having their two-game winning streak stopped last week by San Francisco was a wakeup call. Maybe the Rams aren’t as good as they thought. It’s one thing to beat up on the weakest division now those games are done.

The pass rush was negated by a number of quick drop passes from Jimmy Garoppolo, who threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns. The Rams did not record a sack and got little pressure. You can expect the Bears to try the same approach to keep Aaron Donald out of the backfield. Donald still leads the NFL with 7.5 sacks and the Rams have collected 20 as a team to rank fifth. The Rams actually rank better than the Bears in several defensive categories including total defense and scoring defense.

The key for both sides is getting the offense going. Jared Goff stumbled against a banged up Niners club completing just 50 percent of his passes for less than 200 yards and an interception. He did have a pair of touchdowns but the offense looked out of sync. The Rams have converted nearly 47 percent of their third downs even after finding success on just 4 of 12 chances last week. Extending drives and scoring in the red zone will help the Rams get a victory.

Two stingy defenses against inconsistent offenses is a huge reason why the total was wagered down and there is value on the UNDER. We don’t often see defensive battles in the league with scoring at an all-time high, but this could be it. And at some point the Bears’ luck is going to run out, though they will stay within the spread.

NFL Score Prediction: Rams 23, Bears 20
