Where Things Stand

Houston Astros

As we enter the second half of this season, the Houston Astros are leading the AL West with 57 wins and 34 losses including the first game of this series in which they fell 0-5.

The Astros have a comfortable 7 game lead over the Oakland Aís who have won 50 games; however, if they wish to maintain the lead in their division, they will need to improve their away record which currently stands at 24-20.

Houston is a much better team at home going 33-14. In their last series at home against the Angels, they won 2 out of 3. Itís when they are on the road that they run into trouble, point in case is their 0-5 loss to Texas in game one of this series.

Texas Rangers

Texas is in third place in the AL West with a betting software record of 49-42 which means they trail the Astros by eight games.

The Rangers are trying to gain momentum and overtake the Cleveland Indians for the second wild-card spot. The Indians are in the lead though with 50-38.

Much like the Astros, the Rangers perform very well when they are home going 30-17 this season, and given they are battling to stay in the post-season they have more than enough incentive to win as many games as possible in this series.

Pitching Match

Houston Astros

Gerrit Cole will get his 20th start of the season on Friday as he is scheduled to take his spot on the mound for the Astros.

Cole might have had a slow start, but he has been performing well as of late. He has won the last eight games in which he started.

In his latest win against the Angels last Saturday he pitched seven innings and did not allow any runs on three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

Cole holds a 9-5 record with a 3.09 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP, 30 walks and 170 strikeouts over 116.2 innings of work this season.

While his season is not impressive compared to some of his peers, we canít deny his improvement in his last three starts where he is 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA, a 1.00 WHIP, five walks and 22 strikeouts over 20 innings.

He is 4-2 against the Rangers with a 3.72 ERA, and a 1.097 WHIP, 17 walks and 78 strikeouts over 48.1 innings in eight career starts against them, which again leaves much to be desired.

Texas Rangers

Although this will be his 38th appearance of Jesse Chavez on the mound for the Rangers, it will only be his 8th start of the season.

Chavezís is 3-4 with a 3.30 ERA, a 1.197 WHIP, 17 walks and 59 strikeouts over 62.2 innings of work. Things did not go his way on his last start while on the road against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. In that game, he allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts to ultimately lose 7-4.

Chavez doesnít usually do well against the Astros, although he has faced them 33 times, only 9 of those was as a starting pitcher. His record against the Astros is 3-2 with a 3.63 ERA, a 1.269 WHIP, 31 walks and 72 strikeouts over 84.1 innings.

Prediction:

Although on paper the pitching match seems even, Cole is on a winning streak and with the potent offense the Astros he should take the win.

Game two of the four-game series will go to the Astros.
