Internet gambling aficionados find themselves caught up in George Osborne’s budget tax increases.
A new tax will be introduced for Internet gambling that is based on the place of consumption. Previously, that tax was levied on a 'place of supply' basis.

Afghanistan Massacre Suspect Last Arrest at Casino
TACOMA, Wash. — (Associated Press) -- A police report says the U.S. soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians was arrested in 2002 in the drunken assault of a casino security guard.
The report was obtained Tuesday by The News Tribune newspaper in Tacoma. It says someone called police to report that the soldier, Robert Bales, had threatened another customer. Two security guards told him to leave, but Bales got out of his cab, picked up a trash can lid and rushed the guards, punching one in the chest before they tackled him.
Maine Gets Casinos

Maine has officially become the latest U.S. state to open a full-scale casino with table games.
The Hollywood Casino Hotel and Raceway in Bangor, Maine, USA, which has been in operation for the last seven years as a slot parlor with only slot machines and video poker machines, Friday added roulette, blackjack, craps, poker and more.
It also has a new name: The Hollywood Casino Bangor.
Voters approved casino expansion in a referendum last fall.

Utah Second State to Make Online Gambling Illegal
Utah has become the second state in the US to specifically make Internet gambling illegal.
House Bill 108 was passed last week and designed to ensure an opt-out for the state should online poker and casino games become legalized on the state front. Neighboring Nevada has already passed legislation allowing for Web poker within that state’s borders.
State Representative Stephen Sandstrom introduced the bill back in January.
Attempts to Legalize Internet Poker, Casinos in Hawaii Fail
Hawaii is the latest state in the US to propose legalizing Internet poker only to have such efforts stall in the legislature.
A series of three related bills that included the legalization of Web poker, brick and mortar casinos and a state lottery were introduced back in January.
Rep. Angus McKelvey introduced the online poker measure that would have provided for a state lottery to oversee and regulate Web gambling activity.
Hawaii is one of only two states in the US that does not permit any form of gambling including a state lottery.

PayPal Cracks Down on March Madness Betting
PayPal has restricted some accounts for their apparent participation in March Madness betting, according to a report appearing in Bloomberg News Thursday.
Emails were sent to those suspected of using PayPal’s service for violation of the gambling policy.
The emails read:
“It has been determined that you are in violation of PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy regarding your sales/offer of March Madness sports pool,” according to the report.
Targeted customers are required to sign an acceptable use affidavit prior to their account being reactivated.
Fool’s Gold: Jamie Gold Poker Room at Tropicana No More After One Month
In a blink of the eye, the much ballyhooed Jamie Gold Poker Room at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is no more after only one month.
The poker room is still open. It’s just not called the “Jamie Gold Poker Room” and any association with the WSOP champ seems to have been erased.
Gold is the biggest winner of the World Series of Poker Main Event ever, having won in 2006. Ultimately he had to split the funds with a promoter as part of a settled lawsuit.
Gold promotional posters have since been replaced with March Madness promos.
Iowa House Kills Online Poker Bill
The Iowa House has decided not to take up Senate File 2257 which would have legalized Internet poker in the state.
House Speaker Kraig Paulsen, R-Hiawatha, said there has been a “general lack of interest” in the topic among his 60-member GOP caucus, according to Dubuque’s KCRG.
“What are we in? Week 10?” Paulsen said March 15. “I don’t know if I’ve had three members mention this subject to me … until this week when the big hub-bub was.”
