Top Trending: The Social and Promotional Gaming Association (SPGA) is No More
So long The Social and Promotional Gaming Association (SPGA) as that trade organization is being absorbed into the Social Gaming Leadership Alliance (SGLA). Scroll down for all the latest gambling headlines from around the globe and the top trending gambling articles at Gambling911.com.
And the SGLA will most certainly have its hands full fighting off a series of suits lodged against states like New York, Louisiana, and more recently, California.
GamblingInsider first reported on the merger Tuesday.
The SPGA is consolidating its efforts with the SGLA. The category is best served by a clear and consistent voice from one group. We’re proud of what our members have accomplished and look forward to the continued leadership of the SGLA.”
The SPGA represented represented 11 operators while the SGLA came into existence back in May, representing some of the biggest names in sweepstakes casinos that include the likes of Chumba and McLuck.
It also helps that former Congressman Jeff Duncan of South Carolina is the executive director of the SGLA and typically attaches his name to statements on behalf of the trade group.
On Friday, AB 831 cleared the state legislature, and now the only thing preventing a ban on the form of gaming in California would be a veto by Gov. Gavin Newsom. California, as the most populous US state, represents a key loss to the sector.
The industry has long argued that, because sweepstakes sites do not require real money deposits, they are fully legal to operate in all US states (the so-called "sweepstakes loophole").

Over 90 Percent of Circa Survivor Field Remains After Week 2 - Correct picks continue to come in for Circa Survivor – The record-breaking professional football contest by Circa Sports – as only 1,180 entries lost in Week 2, leaving 16,965 still competing for over $18 million. The top five selections of Week 2 all won their matchups. Baltimore, Los Angeles and Detroit all won with relative ease, while Arizona and Dallas made those who picked them sweat. Dallas went into overtime against New York and pulled out a win. There was a chance the game would end in a tie. Ties do eliminate anyone who picked either team in a game in Circa Survivor. Pittsburgh, the sixth most-picked selection, ended up losing to Seattle causing 491 entries to be eliminated. Losing teams with more than 100 entries rooting for them included Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Miami and Houston. 16,965 Circa Survivor entries have advanced to Week 3. This is over 90% of the original field, which was made up of 18,718 contestants. This is by far the highest percentage to reach Week 3 in Circa Survivor history. The previous high was in 2021, where 73.2% of the field remained. Last year, just 27.2% of the then record-setting field made it to Week 3. Circa Grandissimo, the new ultra-luxury version of Circa Survivor, saw its first entrant be eliminated. One entry, Blue Jay Way Too, out of the total 69 entries ended up picking Pittsburgh. The remaining entries had to sweat out games including Dallas and Arizona. These 68 contestants have all advanced to Week 3 and are in contention for the $6.9 million prize.

- Atlantic City Casinos Best Summer in Over a Decade - Figures released Tuesday by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement show the nine Atlantic City casinos collectively won nearly $312 million in August, up 6.1% from the same month a year ago. Brick-and-mortar casinos won more than online betting operations for the fourth straight month. Internet gambling set another record in August at $248 million, surpassing the previous record set just a month earlier. “We’re happy the market found some growth; it was a very good month,” said Mark Giannantonio, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey and of Resorts Casino Hotel. “Hopefully it can be sustained into the fall and winter months. I’m very happy about it.”
- Michigan Reports Huge August Revenue Numbers, But There was Still a Drop - According to the Michigan Gaming Control Board, the three Detroit casinos topped more than $106 million in August. It should be noted that August’s Detroit casino totals were down more than 4% from August’s total from 2024. MGM Grand Detroit dominated August, nearly accounting for 50% of the $106+ million casino game revenue. Motor City Casino came in a distant second with a 30% share. Hollywood Casino finished a distant third, contributing 22% to the $106.9 million casino revenue. Even though Michigan has 23 tribal casinos, they pay considerably less in gaming taxes to local state agencies. This is due to the Indian Bureau’s economic impact of legalizing tribally owned casinos for federally recognized sovereign tribal nations, courtesy of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. To prevent billions in lost gaming tax revenue from leaving the state, the Michigan Gaming Control Board continues its unyielding campaign, cracking down on unlicensed online casinos.
- Why Billionaires Are Piling Into Prediction Markets - Prediction markets are hotspots for investments from the smartest billionaires in finance. Interactive Brokers founder Thomas Peterffy (net worth: $72 billion) told Forbes he tried to acquire Kalshi shortly after its angel round in 2021. Spurned, but undeterred, Peterffy’s Interactive Brokers launched a subsidiary called ForecastEx a year ago and is now competing with Kalshi, with future events ranging from the NYC mayoral race to the year-end 2025 price of Bitcoin. In April 2024, Jeff Yass’s ($65 billion) quantitative trading hedge fund Susquehanna International Group joined forces with Kalshi to provide liquidity as one of its primary market makers. More recently, Kalshi partnered with Vlad Tenev’s ($6.4 billion) Robinhood to add event contracts trading to the firm’s growing retail investment offerings. (read more from Forbes here)
- Winning $2 Miillion Powerball Ticket is Sold at a Publix in Florida. Here’s Where - A Powerball player just missed a $67 million jackpot — but still won a life-changing prize in Florida. The player bought a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the Sept. 15 drawing. The lucky ticket was sold at the Publix grocery store on McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers.
- Lawmakers just pushed AB 831 through the Assembly with a clean 63-0 vote, aiming to put a stop to online sweepstakes-style casinos statewide. The bill managed to get through just in the nick of time with the legislative period in California coming to a close this past Friday. Now it’s up to Governor Gavin Newsom. He can sign the bill into law. But will he? Sponsored by Assemblymember Avelino Valencia, the AB 831 bill targets sweepstakes casinos that use “no purchase necessary” and “dual currency” models—think social casino platforms like Chumba Casino, LuckyLand Slots, and Global Poker. Governor Gavin Newsom has until October 12 to act. So far, he hasn’t said a word about it publicly. The bill can also become law without his signature should he choose to do nothing, or Newsom can veto the bill. While the powerful tribes in the state are against these sweepstakes casinos, the Social Gaming Leadership Alliance and VGW (parent company of Chumba and LuckyLand) do have some sway.
