Former US President Donald Trump is taking a significant lead over current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in recent days.
A post-indictment poll has Trump surging to his highest lead yet against DeSantis.
Trump is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday to face a New York City indictment, which was revealed as existing on Thursday with a grand jury vote but remains sealed. Reports suggest he is being charged with over two dozen counts but the indictment remains sealed.
The investigation being conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg involves alleged payments made during Trump's 2016 presidential campaign to silence claims of an extramarital sexual encounter with an adult entertainment star, Stormy Daniels.
Trump remained the -150 favorite to win the GOP nomination in 2024 while DeSantis was coming in at +120.
It should be noted that DeSantis' poll numbers had been on the decline in recent weeks, quite possibly as a result of his "War on Wokeism" as Floridians grapple with rising insurance rates, increased rents and maintenance payments, not to mention traffic woes.
Ads began running locally this week from a Trump-alligned PAC painting DeSantis as someone who had previously voted to cut Medicaid.
The commercial is brutal.
“Think you know Ron DeSantis?” the MAGA Inc., ad begins. “Think again. In Congress, DeSantis voted three separate times to cut Social Security.”
“Worse? DeSantis voted to cut medicare two times,” adds the tv spot, which will run on Fox News, CNN and Newsmax.
The MAGA Inc. tv spot concludes: “The more you see about DeSantis, the more you see he doesn’t share our values. He’s not ready to be president.”
The latest Yahoo News/YouGov survey shows Trump up 26 percentage points — 57% to 31% — in a one-on-one contest over DeSantis. A previous poll conducted prior to the indictment revelations had him up 47% vs. 39%.
That same poll also reveals that most Americans don't think Trump should be allowed to serve as president again if convicted.
