Betting on College Football in West Virginia

With sportsbooks opening in the state of West Virginia, it should maybe come as no surprise that the state is now the top referrer to the Gambling911.com website, at least for the moment.  Betting on College Football in the state resulted in some $340,000 at the only open sportsbook in the state at Hollywood Casino.

These sportsbooks have their advantages: Convenience, the overall experience of being in a physical sportsbook, and fast payouts at the counter.  But unlike their counterparts online (the internationally-licensed sportsbooks), West Virginia books won't be mobile until geo-locating systems are tested and proven to be working propery, you'll also need to be 21 or older (its 18 and up at the offshores), and you'll have to pay some pretty steep state taxes (the international sites don't tax or report to tax authorities).

In West Virginia, the tax will be 10%.  Mobile betting won't be available to many of the folks who would typically frequent these casinos (i.e. from Ohio, Maryland and Virginia).  Folks will be better off wagering with internationally licensed mobile casinos while in Pennsylvania as the tax rate will be set at a sick 38%!!!!

Ironically, West Virginia's first sportsbook to open will is geared more towards those living throughout the state of Maryland and is fairly accessible to those in Baltimore and Washington, DC. (around an hour-and-a-half drive from both places).

Whereas the state of New Jersey does not allow betting on its local college teams (i.e. Rutgers and Seton Hall), West Virginia lawmakers knew better.  After all, those in this region (including folks from Western Maryland) live and breather West Virginia Mountaineers football.

The state’s four other casinos will also launch wagering this fall.
