One would think the Grammy Awards might generate the same amount of buzz as the Oscars later this month among gamblers. It doesn't, for whatever strange reason. After all, we love music as much as we love the movies.
And it's not for lack of Grammy Awards betting odds not being offered by the vast number of online gambling websites out there.
BetUS.com - one of the largest - has had Grammy odds posted for weeks, though even there the offerings are slim. Odds being offered were as follows:
Record of the Year:
Adele (Chasing Pavements) +225 pays $22.50 for every $10 bet
Coldplay (Viva La Vida) +200 pays $20 for every $10 bet.
Leona Lewis (Bleeding Love) is the favorite which pays around even odds
M.I.A. (Paper Planes) +600 pays $60 for every $10 bet
R. Plant & A. Krauss (Please Read The Letter) pays $50 for every $10 bet
Album of the Year:
Coldplay (Viva La Vida or Death & All His Friends) +165 pays $16.5 on $10
Lil Wayne (Tha Carter III) +165 pays $16.50 for every $10 bet
Ne-Yo (Year of the Gentleman) +350 pays $35.50 for every $10 bet
R. Plant & A. Krauss (Raising Sand) +300 pays $30 for every $10 bet
Radiohead (In Rainbows) +450 pays $45.50 for every $10 bet
Song of the Year:
Estelle (American Boy) +400 odds pays $40 for every $10 bet
Adele (Chasing Pavements) +200 odds pays $20 for every $10 bet
Jason Mraz (I'm Yours) +350 pays $35 for every $10 bet
Sara Bareilles (Love Song) +200 pays $20 for every $10 bet
Coldplay (Viva La Vida) pays even odds
"The online gambling websites will take some action but nothing that even nears that of the Oscars," explains Payton O'Brien of Gambling911.com. "The Academy Awards is the third most bet on single day event of the year," she adds.
BetUS.com already is offering a whole menu of Oscar odds.
"The traffic inquiries for Oscar betting have already been coming in at a steady flow," O'Brien says. "We believe Academy Awards betting this year will be staggering and perhaps record breaking."
Not so with the Grammys, Oscar's red-headed step child.
"I gotta tell you I have heard of maybe only half the songs that are nominated for the Grammy Award," O'Brien said. "I mean, really, where is ‘I Kissed a Girl' among the nominees? Sure it's shock value, but reminiscent of early Alanis Morissette, with its catchy thought out lyrics. Rihanna and Beyonce it seemed were singing every other song on my favorite radio station this past year, but it doesn't appear as if they are getting any type of recognition, at least not in the major categories."
But the biggest shocker of all?
"No Britney!" exclaimed O'Brien. "Gotta confess I loved her last album. I understand that popularity does not always translate into talent and vice versa but popularity does translate into ratings and betting for that matter. Although I can't say definitively that a Rihanna or Beyonce nomination is going to generate a whole lot of buzz among bettors. The MTV Video Music Awards fails to generate much buzz in the online gambling community either."
But music and gambling do mix and are more than capable of generating revenues within the online gambling sector. Case in point: The Super Bowl.
"Perhaps the biggest Super Bowl betting props outside of who would win were none other than how long the National Anthem (sung by Jennifer Hudson) would last - Over or Under 2 minutes, and the song set Bruce Springsteen elected to play during the Super Bowl Halftime Show."
