In May 2018 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states could begin offering sports betting, including via the Web. While the Oscars may not seem like a sports betting event (and indeed it is not), for years the awards show has been a pivotal part of sportsbook offerings throughout the world. In fact, outside of the U.S. Presidential elections and a handful of other big political events like Brexit, the Oscars has long been the most bet on single day non-sporting event.
Utah will not be hosting online gambling sites as the state prohibits all forms of gambling businesses, including lotteries, from operating here.
New Mexico became the first state west of the Mississippi to open a sportsbook following the U.S. Supreme Court ruling. There is only one limited option sportsbook operating outside of Albuquerque. The book does not offer an online site and will not be taking bets on the Oscars.
On Jan. 23, 2019, a trio of Arizona lawmakers introduced a new bill -- SB 1158 -- that would authorize federally recognized tribes with a gaming compact to "operate sports betting" in the state. The proposed law would prohibit others from offering sports betting. Under the bill, the definition of sports betting "does not include wagering on sporting events that is prohibited by the National Collegiate Athletic Association."
Colorado has not introduced legislation that would permit sportsbooks from operating within the state to take Oscar betting.
Despite these scenarios, residents of all three states can still access and bet at international websites offering Oscar wagering. Some sites do not permit access from Washington State residents as a result of their law.
