A popular food item on the Fourth of July will again take center stage at Coney Island on Thursday. While most of us are consuming a few hot dogs over the course of the Independence Day holiday, if we’re even eating dogs, the contestants at the annual competition will be trying to stuff as many as they can down their gullet in 10 minutes to claim the coveted Mustard Belt and the $10,000 prize that comes with it.

Returning champions from both the men’s and women’s side will look to keep their streaks going. The most famous name in competitive eating and a future Hall of Famer, Joey Chestnut is the person to beat on the men’s side. Chestnut broke his own world record by consuming 74 hot dogs to win last year’s event for his third straight Mustard Belt title.

Previously lumped together with men for the competitions, women have held their own battle since 2011. There have been just two winners on the women’s side with Las Vegas resident Miki Sudo the overwhelming favorite to win her sixth title in a row.

The 2019 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest will take place on Thursday, July 4 at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island. The women’s competition will take place at 10:45 a.m. ET with the men’s event following at 12 p.m. ET. The men’s contest will air live on ESPN2.

BookMaker.eu has posted odds for the competition and we’ll take a look at some them below.

2019 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest - Total Hot Dogs Eaten by Men's Winner

Over 74.5 +139

Under 74.5 -173

Chestnut owns the world record of 74 dogs eaten in a 10-minute span, so taking the over on this one could be a reach. However, we’ve seen the number of dogs swallowed increase over the last five competitions with Chestnut getting at least 70 in each of the last three years. And seeing how the sport and its athletes have evolved with their training regimens, we could surpass 74.5 this year. Dropping a few coins on the over is the smart move on this wager.

2019 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest - Total Hot Dogs Eaten by Women's Winner

Over 38.5 -106

Under 38.5 -125

The question here isn’t who’s going to win rather how many dogs can Sudo consume in the allotted time. She ate a personal-best 41 dogs to win the 2017 contest and twice reached 38 during her current five-year title run. She slipped last year and ate only 37 dogs, the fewest at the competition in four years. Oddsmakers are split on the number with both the over and under getting negative odds. However, without much competition I think Sudo slides under the total.

Joey Chestnut to Win 2019 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest

Yes -1474

No +744

The path to a fourth straight title and 12th overall got a bit easier for Chestnut when last year’s runner-up Carmen Cincotti elected not to compete. Not that Cincotti’s presence would have made a difference. He finished a distant second with 64 dogs and buns devoured last year. Matt Stonie is a go for the Fourth of July and comes in knowing he’s the only man to beat Chestnut here in the last 12 years. Stonie ended Chestnut’s eight-year winning streak prevailing by two dogs in the 2015 competition.

Miki Sudo to Win 2019 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest

Yes -850

No +524

Sudo is the prohibitive favorite to win her sixth straight title and there really is no one standing in her way of getting it. She defeated runner-up Michelle Lesco by nine hot dogs last year and she is the top ranked female eater and No. 6 overall in the Major League Eating rankings.
