George Costanza, poker shill?

Whatever floats your (full) boat!

Online poker room Poker Stars (www.pokerstars.com) has announced that it has signed comic actor and poker buff Jason Alexander to be a celebrity spokesman.

Alexander, 49, is best known for playing the role of nerdy loser George Costanza in the American hit television series "Seinfeld."

In real life he is an avid poker player, having competed several times in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas.

He also participated in NBC's made-for-TV poker competition, "Heads-up Poker."

As part of his flacking duties, Alexander, a graduate of Boston University, will promote the Poker Stars brand by participating in online and live poker events, including the upcoming 2009 WSOP as well as Poker Stars-sponsored tournaments around the globe.

"Poker Stars has very graciously asked me to sign on as one of their official players,"=9D Alexander said in a press release announcing the hiring. "I am very flattered and happy to be playing for a real quality site and with the kind of professionals that remind me every day how truly mediocre I am at this game. But I'm learning. And now I can learn from some of the best."

Alexander will officially be known as an "international celebrity ambassador" for Poker Stars.

Others currently serving in that role are pro hockey player Mats Sundin, former pro tennis player Boris "Boom Boom" Becker and former pro baseball player Orel Hershiser.

Alexander got the shilling gig through his poker management firm, Poker Royalty.
