For Senator Joseph McCarthy back in the 1950's, it was the Communists.  McCarthy came up with a list of alleged Communists from Hollywood actors to screenwriters. Ultimately, McCarthy's tactics and his inability to substantiate his claims led him to be discredited and censored by the United States Senate.

Today, we have Republican Representative Spencer Bacchus who has declared there are Socialists amongst us...or at least in Congress.

Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.) - an outspoken opponent of online gambling - puts the number of socialists in the House at 17.

"Some of the men and women I work with in Congress are socialists," Bachus told local government leaders on Thursday.

Bacchus made the comments during a breakfast meeting in Birmingham.

Bachus said that Obama is a better listener than President Bush, but that Obama was being steered to the left by Congress.

"He tries to get ideas from people," Bachus said. He added that he has "some hope" for the new president.

Bacchus declined to name the 17 alleged Socialists.
