At the kickoff of this year’s Battle of Malta, we had real gladiators join hostess Maria Ho to introduce the event.
This event stresses the very informal, fun and party atmosphere while also incorporating a bit of the island nation of Malta’s colorful history.
In more recent history, Malta served as a strategic military and naval fortress during World War II.
The Siege of Malta was a military campaign in the Mediterranean Theatre of the Second World War. From 1940–42, the fight for the control of the island pitted the air forces and navies of Italy and Germany against the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.
Today there is a siege of a different kind, a bombardment of poker players has descended upon the island to take part in this year’s Battle of Malta. Some 2000 were expected.
