While the start of the NFL season is something to get excited about, the preseason openers are typically a snoozefest. The New York teams will play their annual exhibition tilt in New Jersey in Week 1 and with a regular season meeting set to take place in November, Thursday’s matchup could be more of a bore.

There is plenty of optimism surrounding the Jets with the addition of Le’Veon Bell. The Giants, meanwhile, are hoping top draft pick Daniel Jones is the successor to Eli Manning. According to the G-Men, Jones “will play” on Thursday, and that’s exciting for Giants fans.

Odds Analysis

The teams have played a preseason game annually since 1969, but reviewing the history of those past games is useless. Even if there was anything to gain from that it would have no bearing on this contest. The teams usually play in Week 3, but with the Giants facing three clubs during the exhibition season that they will cross paths with in the regular year, a change was made. Typical of most early preseason games the line has the Jets favored by 2-points with the total at 32.5. They’ve easily cleared that total in the last six preseason meetings.

Jets

It’s the shortest road trip ever for the Jets and it is a meaningful event for new coach Adam Gase. Brought in to aid in the development of Sam Darnold, Gase will unveil his offense. However, we won’t see Bell. And if Darnold plays it will be brief. The usefulness of preseason games depends a lot on what the team is trying to accomplish, and we’ve seen a shift to sitting starters more over the last several years.

During his three years with the Dolphins, Gase was consistent with how he spread preseason playing time around. “Majority of the time we’ve played our first group in the first quarter,” he said. “It’s been different as far as how the starters go.” So what does that mean? Well, Darnold could play a series before turning things over to the backups. And the Jets need to find a suitable No. 2 since Josh McCown retired.

Trevor Siemian is in line for the gig but keep an eye on Davis Webb. Drafted by the Giants a few years ago and widely seen as the heir to Eli’s throne, Webb was released after last preseason. The Jets scooped him up and will take a look at him. He didn’t throw a pass in a game last season serving as McCown’s backup while Darnold was injured. The Jets have four quarterbacks on the roster and a thin group of receivers, and it could be a struggle to score points.

Giants

With a roster of their guys in place, coach Pat Shurmur and GM Dave Gettleman are anxious to start the season. The buzzword around the club since those two became attached at the hip is culture, and with only 14 of the 90 players on the roster predating the regime, things are taking shape. The culture clearly focuses on the team rather than individual personalities. If it didn’t Odell Beckham Jr. would still be in a Giants uniform.

Will the culture translate into wins once the bell rings? We don’t know the answer, but we do know that you can’t flip a switch. This is a roster that was torn down and rebuilt, and we should see the results of that transformation in the preseason. You can have culture, but it doesn’t mean squat if you don’t have the players. We will get a good look at Jones on Thursday while Eli likely remains on the sideline.

Jones will get a bulk of the reps with Kyle Lauletta and Alex Tanney picking up the scraps. Don’t expect Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to take it easy on them. The Jets will throw the kitchen sink at the rookie, and with an offensive line that will be without starting tackles Nate Solder and Mike Remmers, Jones and the other QB’s will be harassed.

With a regular season meeting on the schedule don’t expect the sides to give away too much inside information. What will likely be a vanilla game anyway becomes blander because of it. We’ve seen plenty of points in past exhibition games between these clubs, but those took place in the dress rehearsal when starters saw their most action. That won’t be the case on Thursday. Several offensive stars on both sides will sit and both clubs have question marks surrounding their receivers. The point total is low even for a preseason game, but I’m not sure where the points are going to come from.

NFL Score Prediction: Jets 16, Giants 9

J.J. McCarthy Drafted Number 3 Odds to Patriots

To be clear, the Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy is pretty certain to land in Minnesota.  But what if the New England Patriots shock us and pick McCarthy at Number 3 before the Vikings get their opportunity at No. 5?
