Asian Gambling Busts Coincided With Euro 2008

Some $US 1.5 billion in bets have been recovered via gambling busts that were orchestrated throughout several countries in the region including China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.  Macau and Hong Kong were two of the major epicentres of the busts.

The Interpol statement to major news agencies noted that police across Asia have arrested more than 1 300 people and seized $US 16 million in major swoops on illegal football gambling networks. In May and June, police raided 1 088 illegal gambling dens across the region, many allegedly controlled by organised crime gangs.

Interpol said in a statement Thursday that the operation in May and June was timed to coincide with the European football championship. Interpol is based in Lyon, France.

The raids targeted more than 1,000 illegal gambling dens, some controlled by organized crime gangs, in several countries.
