An all important prep race for the Kentucky Derby, since 2013, it has been part of the official Road to the Kentucky Derby, offering the winner 100 points and thus assuring a position in the starting gate.

This one is run on 1 1⁄8 miles (9 furlongs) of dirt and features a $1 million purse.  Bets need to be placed prior to 6:30 pm EST.

Since its inception, ten Santa Anita Derby winners have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby, including Triple Crown winner Affirmed in 1978.

Seven horses who lost at Santa Anita went on to triumph in Kentucky.

In 1988, Winning Colors became the first and to date only filly to win both Derbies.

The weather is expected to be sunny on Saturday.

Game Winner is the favorite at 4-5 odds.  He's the early favorite to win this year's Kentucky Derby.  He'll pay $70 for every $10 bet and those odds will get shorter should he go on to win this one.

He's a Bob Baffert trained horse that has won the Del Mar Futurity, American Pharoah Stakes and Breeders Cup Juvenile.  His most recent race was a 2nd place finish at the grade 2 Rebel Stakes.

Roadster is at 5-2 odds.  He's the pick of HorseRacingNation.com.

He's also a Bob Baffert trained horse.

Roadster finished 3rd at the Del Mar Futurity and was listed at early 25-1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby.

Some books have already posted prop bet odds for the margin of victory in this year’s Kentucky Derby. For example, if you think that the winning horse in the 2019 Kentucky Derby will best the field by a half-length to three-quarter length distance, you can get +375 betting odds.

One of the more interesting Kentucky Derby bets on the board with the actual field sight unseen is the winning gate. The odds that one of the entries starting from the No. 1 post through the No. 10 post wins the race are set at -300. The odds for a horse winning the race from gates 11 through 20 are set at +200. That seems like a very tempting bet to place, but there is always a reason why the odds are set the way they are.

Game Winner+700 - Pays $70 for every $10 bet.  He's the winner of three grade 1 races including the Del Mar Futurity, American Pharoah Stakes and Breeders Cup Juvenile and finished 2nd in his most recent race, the grade 2 Rebel Stakes.
