FBI Agents Grilled in Paul Phua Sports Gambling Case Monday

(Associated Press) - An FBI agent is facing tough questions about whether investigators intentionally deceived a federal magistrate to obtain a search warrant and arrest a Malaysian businessman, his son and six others last summer in Las Vegas.

FBI Special Agent Minh Pham on Monday has repeatedly had to acknowledge inaccuracies in documents filed to gain the arrest last July of Wei Seng "Paul" Phua and Darren Wai Kit Phua.

Prosecutors say they headed an international Internet sports gambling operation.

Mistrial Declared in Connecticut Tiffany Stevens Murder-for-Hire Trial

HARTFORD — (Associated Press) - A judge has declared a mistrial because of a deadlocked jury in the case of a Connecticut woman accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill her ex-husband during a bitter child custody case.

Hartford Superior Court Judge Edward J. Mullarkey declared the mistrial Friday in the case of former Bloomfield resident Tiffany Stevens, who remains free on $1 million bail. The case is expected to be retried before another jury.

Judge Voids Revel Sale to Canadian Firm

CAMDEN, N.J. – (Associated Press) -A bankruptcy court judge has voided the proposed sale of the former Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to a Canadian firm that has since backed out of the deal.

Judge Gloria Burns on Friday granted a request by Revel Entertainment to cancel the $110 million sale to Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management.

The company had won a court auction for the failed $2.4 billion casino resort. But it backed out when it could not resolve a dispute with bondholders over debt from the construction of the casino’s costly power plant.

Golden Nugget to Sue Over Tax Rise

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — (Associated Press) - An Atlantic City casino who says its taxes would rise dramatically under a proposed tax assistance bill designed to help the struggling seaside resort says it will sue to block the plan.

The Golden Nugget says its calculations of the amount each casino would pay under a proposed payment in lieu of taxes drastically raises taxes for it, Resorts and Bally's — three of the city's smaller casinos — while giving huge tax breaks to big casinos owned or soon to be owned by billionaire Carl Icahn and gambling giant Caesars Entertainment.
