Padraig Harrington

Unlike a number of the golfers who were early favorites and now reduced to triple digit long shots after Day 1 action, oddsmakers were less inclined to touch Padraig Harrington.  He was listed with nearly the same odds he opened up with at Sportingbet.com - 25/1 for a payout potential of US$2500 on every US$100 bet.

Trying to become the first player in 53 years to win a major three times in a row, Padraig Harrington was more than happy to be five shots off the lead after his 1-under 69.

After missing five cuts in a row before a low-key victory in Ireland, he feared that miserable trend on the regular tours might have continued into Turnberry.

"I hit a lot of nice shots where I was aiming in the middle of the green. I didn't really have the confidence to chase the pins and was trying to hole from 25, 30 feet most of the day," he said. "I got up and down when I needed to get up and down. While I wasn't shooting the lights out, it gives me hope for the next three days."

Tiger Woods, by the way, was cut down to 5/1 odds for a payout potential of US$500 on every US$100 bet.

Iowa State: Are They The Underdogs To Look For In March Madness?

They may be defined as “underdogs” or “Cinderella teams”, a term that is usually saved for teams that have little to no chance of winning even a single game during the NCAA Tournament. Teams like Loyola Marymount (1990), George Mason (2006), Davidson (2008), VCU (2011), UConn (2014), and Loyola Chicago (2018) come to mind when conversations turn toward the most surprising tournament runs in recent memory.
