The field is now set for the 2023 Kentucky Derby.  Post positions will typically have an influence on the odds.  Let's take a look.

The Losers

Hit Show (30-1) gets the bad beat at post position No. 1.  We've discussed previously why trainers hate the number 1 post position the most in the Kentucky Derby and why we should ignore the winnings from this spot prior to 1974.

Derma Sotogake (10-1) Not only has a horse never one from this starting position (17), the UAE Derby winner has never gone on to be victorious at the Kentucky Derby either.  His odds should be closer to 50-1.

Lord Miles (30-1) starts from the 19 spot, which has only produced a single winner (I’ll Have Another in 2012).

The Winners

Tapit Trice (5-1) - Ten winners have come out of the No. 5 spot (that's the most of any post position) and Tapit Trice comes into this race looking impressive.  He's also got the second shortest odds outside of Forte.

Mage (15-1) - He'll start from the number 8 post position, which has brought us nine winners.

Practical Move (10-1) - If you like playing the lottery, this is your pick.   Practical Move starts from the No. 10 post position at 10-1 odds.  The position produced nine winners in Derby history, otherwise we might have the trifecta with the 10's.
