Tough Luck Laak: IRS Places Liens on Poker Pro Unabomber for Unpaid Taxes

Poker pro Phil Laak owes $24,874 in unpaid taxes, according to the IRS.  Liens have been placed on Laak's personal property and bank accounts as a result.

Still, this should be an easy fix for Laak, who has made millions playing poker in various tournaments.

The Internal Revenue Service Fresh Start Program now allows individuals owing under $50,000 to enter into an installment plan over a six year period without divulging personal bank account information. Likewise, tax liens will typically be removed from public record and credit reports provided an individual owes under the $50,000 amount and agrees to have installments paid via bank direct deposit.

Interestingly enough, the IRS tax lien is one of the only improprieties completely erased from one’s credit report even if not fully paid, unlike a bankruptcy, which will continue to be reflected on one’s credit report up to 7 years even if paid in full.

Laak is commonly referred to as “The Unabomber” for wearing hooded sweatshirts and sunglasses at the poker tables.  He is married to “Bride of Chuckie” star and fellow poker player Jennifer Tilly.
