Yes it's true.  Ireland's leading bookmaker has entered into the very first confessional box sponsorship in a Catholic church in England.

Paddy Power teamed up with top jockey Frankie Dettori this morning to unveil the innovative sponsorship in Our Lady with St. Etheldreda Church in Newmarket ahead of this weekend's Guineas Festival.

The sponsorship, which is valued at £10,000, was the brainchild of Paddy Power and Newmarket Parish Priest Father Michael Griffin with the sponsorship money helping to finance the reordering of the church.  The reordering has been planned for a number of years with finance proving a major a hurdle.

Whether the Vatican approves of this concept remains to be seen.

Paddy Power said "From our point of view it's a great fit to sponsor a confession box in a church nestled in the galloping heart of British horse racing.  We hope that over time confessing your sins in the Paddy Power confession box will become a tradition for Newmarket race goers!"

Fr Michael Griffin said "Our church has felt for a long time that we should have closer ties with the horse racing industry in Newmarket.  Through the generosity of Paddy Power this is now starting to happen"
