The Clock Is Ticking

It’s no secret that professional football towers over all sports in terms of popularity, which is why the NFL’s 32-team, 12-month news cycle has no offseason. The two biggest storylines of what is actually the offseason involve free agency and the draft.

The latter is on display this week in Titletown, Green Bay, hosting the proceedings. There will be 257 picks over the seven rounds of the draft (including compensatory selections given to teams that lost players via free agency).

With 2025 NFL draft odds on the board even before the end of last season, it’s just about time to have the ‘enlistees’ meet the commissioner (who’s invariably going to be booed).

As of this writing, the day before the fun, those Tennessee Titans are on the clock with the 2025 NFL draft 1st pick. The second choice belongs to the Cleveland Browns, then the New York Giants at No. 3.

The New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars are at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

Every team in the league has (theoretically) done its due diligence prior to the draft, poking and probing (via the combine, pro days and interviews) each of the prospects they have under consideration. Of course, audibles are necessary once draft-day trades occur.

It’s no secret that certain teams’ track records in the draft have been better than others. If you’re going to assign grades to teams, it’s not always straightforward, as bad teams have higher draft picks, thus a better chance of paydirt (again, barring trades along the way).

Franchises with perennial success have to work with lower selections, which isn’t to say they haven’t found hidden gems.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens have continued to find ‘value’ players who’ve contributed while usually drafting down the ladder, while Tampa Bay’s Buccaneers and the Oakland/Los Angeles/ Oakland/Las Vegas Raider franchise are among those with tainted records.

There hasn’t been a single team without buyer’s remorse somewhere.

When and Where Is the 2025 NFL Draft?

If you’re asking, “when is the NFL draft?”, head to Wisconsin immediately. Green Bay (in and around Lambeau Field) is the site of the 2025 NFL draft beginning tomorrow (Thursday, April 24th, first round), April 25th (the second and third rounds), and April  26th (fourth through seventh).

Who Are the Top NFL Draft Prospects in 2025?

The NFL draft order (as of this draft-eve missive) finds the Tennessee Titans having the first overall selection. That’s because the Titans were 3-14 in last season’s NFL standings, the league’s worst record (with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants).

It’s Cameron Ward, quarterback out of Miami (Fla.), as the prohibitive 1-200 (-20000) choice to ‘get taken’ by the Titans, atop the board in the NFL mock draft. Penn St. edge rusher Abdul Carter is currently at 25-1 (+2500) to have that honor. Colorado teammates Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders are listed at 45-1 (+4500) and 65-1 (+6500) on that proposition.

Boise St. running back Ashton Jeanty and Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham also figure to be early selections Thursday.
