The suspect in a 2023 murder has been apprehended at a California casino.

California Highway Patrol says Nathanuel McCowan, 49, is suspected of killing his wife Laketha McCowan, who was found with a gunshot wound on the side of a freeway.

An investigation into the murder has gone on for nearly two years now.

On February 26, 2023, officers from the CHP's Oakland Area office responded to a report of an assault in progress at approximately 1:30 a.m. on the Edwards Avenue offramp from eastbound Interstate 580 in Oakland. Officers discovered a woman on the shoulder with a gunshot wound, and paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Detectives from the CHP's Golden Gate Division Special Investigations Unit (SIU) identified Nathanuel McCowan as the primary suspect in his wife's murder.

The woman was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived at the scene.

Detectives later identified Nathaniel McCowan as the primary suspect in the death.

Following the prolonged investigation, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office filed charges against McCowan and located him at the Sky River Casino.

McCowan was taken into custody without incident and transported to Alameda County and booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
