Why Tapit Trice Should Win The Kentucky Derby

He is one of two horses trained by Todd Pletcher to enter this year's Kentucky Derby.  But he's sort of playing second fiddle to the favorite, Forte, Pletcher's other horse.

Tapit has won his last two graded races coming into this year's Kentucky Derby: The Tampa Bay Derby and, more recently, the Blue Grass Stakes.

In 2007, Street Sense became the first Tampa Bay Derby participant to win the Kentucky Derby. In 2010, Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby.

But it's the Blue Grass Stakes win that makes us most optimistic.

"The $1 million Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland has long ranked among the most important Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifiers. It's produced 23 Kentucky Derby winners dating back to 1911, and these days the 1 1/8-mile race awards Kentucky Derby qualifying points on a 100-40-30-20-10 basis to its top five finishers."

Some More Food for Thought

Luis Saez will be guiding Tapit Trice.  He is 0 for 9 in the Derby.

"(Tapit Trice is) absolutely outstanding," Tapit Trice's breeder Antony Beck said immediately following his Blue Grass victory.  "It's wonderful to be partners with Mandy (Pope). It's a great friendship. We both love, love horses; we both love the sport. Tapit has been an incredible stallion and this is another one of his incredible horses. I also want to thank John Fort (of Peachtree Stable), who selected Danzatrice (dam of Tapit Trice) for me as a 2-year-old. Without that, we wouldn't be here."
