According to Twitter Study, America is Siding With Chris Rock Over Will Smith

In a semi-scientific study connected with geotagged Twitter data, the majority America is siding with Chris Rock instead of Will Smith in the “Slapgate” saga from the Oscars. 

Starting Sunday night when the incident occurred, gaming website BetOnline.ag compiled and analyzed geotagged tweets, analyzing hashtags from each state in the U.S.

For example, hashtags such as #TeamWill, #TeamWillSmith, or #TeamChris, #TeamChrisRock were tracked. More than 200,000 tweets were used in the study. The results were tallied up per state to assign the “winner” from each state.

It’s interesting to note the regional and possibly political angles in that the states supporting Smith were from the midwestern and southern regions of the United States. 

In total, Twitter showed that 41 states sided with Rock while just nine states were backing Smith.
