September 2020 has been especially rough on bookmakers operating in the South Florida area.
In particular, the Miami Heat had a stretch of seven consecutive covers during the post season. More importantly, the Heat had failed to cover the spread in only three post season games leading up to September 25. That's 11 games in which Miami has covered or a near 79% success rate.
The NFL isn't helping much early on. The Miami Dolphins managed to cover in Week 2 and win its Thursday Night game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3.
Meanwhile, in college football, the Hurricanes were starting to look like a dominant force. As this went to press, Miami was in the midst of destroying FSU to go up 3-0 Against The Spread.
The Canes could potentially give area bookies fits in this abbreviated season.
"Miami unveiled its new turnover chain and got to wear it three times against Louisville" writes Andrea Adelson of ESPN. "But there is no doubt Manny Diaz will want to see improvements out of the defense after it gave up over 500 yards of offense. One more area that absolutely needs work: penalties. Miami is far from being back, but the Hurricanes appear to be a vastly improved team from a year ago."
Adelson also noted that Miami's 38 points against FSU were its most in a first half since scoring 49 against Savannah State on Sept. 21, 2013. It is their most in an opening half against an FBS opponent in at least the last 15 seasons.
