As France becomes the latest country to cancel its soccer season, Spain appears committed to resuming La Liga, albeit after the summer.

Health minister Salvador Illa says Spain’s soccer league may not return before the start of summer.

He said: "I cannot say if football is going to be able to restart its activity before summer. It would be imprudent of me to offer a definitive view."

Staging games is clearly some way off, and it seems certain any resumption would mean fixtures being played initially behind closed doors.

Reports have suggested clubs and league officials could be targeting a return to action on June 6 or June 13.

The Bundesliga could be the first top-flight football competition in the world to return amid the coronavirus pandemic.

A maximum of 300 people would be allowed inside a stadium and players would be tested for coronavirus regularly.

The German Government is yet to sign off on the plan to resume the league on May 9.

"We're like the guinea pigs at the moment," Brandon Borrello, an Australian who plays right wing for SC Freiburg, told the ABC.
"But it's a really hard situation to be in — obviously it's never happened before.
"If it works well, I mean, there should be no reason for other leagues not to follow in the future."
