Davenport Iowa Wins Out With Sports Betting

Outside of Vegas there are a few US cities that will have easy access to multiple sportsbooks.  Among them, Residents of Memphis can bet in person at a number of Tunica, Mississippi establishments.  In addition to sports betting websites already accessible from out-of-state operators, those in Memphis will soon be able to play on apps with in-state operators.

Philadelphia, Newark, NJ, and ultimately Chicago are/will be blessed with great exposure to sportsbooks, both retail and online.

Chicago likely won't have a brick and mortar sportsbook in place for the 2020 Super Bowl, but perhaps in time for March Madness.

Pittsburgh and just about every other city in PA will luck out when it comes to in-state sports betting....but with one important caveat.  The taxes imposed on Pennsylvania sportsbooks is a sick 34 percent!  Compare that to New Jersey at 13%.  Somebody has to pay the piper.  That will likely take on the form of limited value when it comes to lines, and probably fewer options when compared to New Jersey and offshore sportsbooks.

Memphis is the only Tennessee city that will have access to both in-state online and physical sportsbooks thanks to Tunica and West Memphis, Arkansas.  Oddly enough, neither Mississippi or Arkansas will have access to in-state sportsbook apps.  Nashville, Little Rock, Jackson, MS will still have access to out-of-state online sportsbooks.

And then there's Davenport, Iowa, another big winner in the race to legalize sports betting stateside.

Two nearby casinos - Rhythm City and Isle Bettendorf - are due to open sportsbooks soon: August 15 if all goes according to plan.

Rhythm City casino just celebrated its three-year anniversary in June.

Rhythm City general Manager Mo Hyder says the existing ‘draft day sports lounge’ was built with wagering in mind.

“With the idea that when sports betting was approved, we would really leverage this and start providing another option for our customers,” Hyder says. “We’ll place a couple of our terminals out here where our customers can walk up and where they can take bets.”

Rhythm City is parterning with Elite Sportsbook and using Bet.Works, while Isle has teamed up with William Hill U.S.

Bet.Works is a startup with investors that include former New England Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour and San Francisco 49ers safety Ronnie Lott.

The Rhythm City sportsbook should give offshore sports betting sites a run for their money with Bet.Works snatching up renowned MGM Resorts International’s former head of sportsbook, Jay Rood.

William Hill already maintained a strong foothold in the state.  The UK betting firm has developed a reputation for booting winning players, at least at its New Jersey properties in Oceanport and Atlantic City.

The Isle Casino, just outside of Davenport, has been preparing to launch its sportsbook for weeks.

“We just think it’s gonna be a lot of fun and a whole new entertainment experience for people in the Quad Cities,” said Isle Casino General Manager Nancy Ballenger.

“We spent $250,000 to put the book in place…We’re gonna have four ticket windows which will have experienced ticket writers that will be able to help you with any of your bets. We’ll have a bunch of odds boards and we’ll also have a bunch of TVs that you’ll be able to watch your favorite games on.”
