On May 8, 2019 it was announced that the Stars Group has entered into a deal to develop a free-to-play sports betting app in addition to a real money sports betting app called FOX Bet.

While the free play product should be available to California residents, the real money wagering platform will not be.

California has yet to legalize sports betting and the Stars Group/Fox venture will only be offering its real money sports betting brand in states that currently license sportsbooks.  Only 11 are authorized to do so as of this writing with Montana, Tennessee and Indiana entering the fray in early May 2019.

A proposed bill to legalize sports wagering barely got off the ground in California that year.

An initiative to authorize the activity in the state expired without enough signatures to be included on the 2020 ballot.  In fact, there were zero signatures.

“We never advanced to get a single signature,” said Russell Lowery, a consultant for a group calling itself Californians for Sports Betting. “It started a conversation in California gaming on what is the right path forward, and those conversations will continue until they figure out the puzzle.”
